Laptops
Why spend an extra $100 on the M2 MacBook Air when the M1 model is available at $650? Two words: the webcam. While the M2 is only marginally faster than the M1, the built-in webcam on this laptop is a clear step up, producing sharper and more vibrant video, even in subpar lighting conditions. So if you spend much of your day on Zoom or Teams, the M2 model makes lots of sense. Note the price is now $50 more than on Black Friday.
Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
Thin, light, and powerful, with battery life to spare, the MacBook Air has been a great choice for consumers since the first model was released way back in 2008. This one—outfitted with Apple’s homegrown M1 processor—debuted in 2020 and is still a compelling choice. (Heck, this copy was written on one!) And the model is now selling at a price so low it practically requires a double take.
Completing the “MacBook Airs on sale for the holidays” portion of this article, this 13-inch laptop from 2024 comes equipped with Apple’s M3 processor, which is, of course, faster than the M2 and M1 but might not be noticeably so if you mostly do things like browse the web or edit office documents. Still, if you’re the type of person who wants the latest and greatest, you’re unlikely to find a better price on this Air for quite some time, though the price is now $50 more than on Black Friday.
Chromebooks
HP makes a lot of Chromebooks, so it can be challenging to find the right one. Let’s save you some time: This 15.6-inch model has just about everything you want in a Chromebook here in late 2024, including an Intel processor, 8GB of memory, and 64GB of flash storage. That may seem underpowered if you’re used to Windows specs, but it’s more than sufficient for “Chromebook-y” things like browsing the web, editing documents, and participating in video calls.
Desktops
This Dell Inspiron desktop computer offers midtier specs for less than what you’d pay for a comparable laptop. It delivers solid performance, ergonomics, and versatility, too. It’s not a high-end gaming PC, but if you’re looking for a reliable desktop at a good price, it’s hard to go wrong here—and the price this week is $20 lower than on Black Friday.
This full-sized tower completes tasks with impressive speed, handling even demanding video games with ease. It features an Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of memory, a 1TB solid-state drive, and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060 video adapter with 8GB of dedicated video memory. It comes bundled with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, the price is now $150 higher than it was last week.
Apple recently unveiled a Mac Mini with an M4 processor, but this M2 model delivers admirable power and performance, especially for this price. The model features 8GB of memory and 256GB of solid-state storage, and remains the least expensive way to buy a Mac, assuming you already have a mouse, keyboard, and external monitor. The good news is that the pice is now $30 lower than last week.
Tablets
Why would you consider this 2022 iPad over the less expensive 2021 model? For one thing, the screen is a little bigger at 10.9 inches. It also has more powerful specs, which may help if you run demanding game apps but is less important for “light” activities like watching videos, browsing the web, and reading ebooks. In the end, neither choice is “wrong.”
Apple iPad (64GB, 2021)
This entry-level iPad from 2021 is a bargain at the usual price. At this price, it’s a steal. It features a 10.2-inch screen (measured diagonally) and boasts more than 14 hours of video play per charge, plus more than enough performance for everyday tasks like browsing the web and watching videos.
Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024)
Released just a few weeks ago, this Fire tablet packs a lot of value into an 8-inch package—and that’s before you even consider the low Cyber Monday price. It doesn’t have high-end features and specs, but if you’re looking to do simple things like stream video, read books, or browse the web on something bigger than your phone, it’s hard to beat. We have yet to finish testing the model but expect it to perform just fine based on the results for the 2022 model.
Printers
If you don’t need to print in color, the Canon imageClass MF267dw is one of the least expensive all-in-one laser printers to purchase and maintain, according to our testers. This printer, which typically sells for about $220, spits out black-and-white text with impressive speed and quality. The model also delivers many of the convenient features you find in a full-blown office printer: a document feeder, a second paper tray, and auto-duplexing, which allows you to print on both sides of a sheet, saving money and the planet. One drawback: Like other laser printers, it’s a bit bulky for a family room, so be sure to note the dimensions.
Routers
This is a good deal for a mesh router three-pack from Nest that did well in our ratings, providing fast speeds even across long distances inside larger homes. There are useful features like automatic firmware updates and app-based management. It’s a WiFi 5 model, which, yes, is the older standard, but it should still provide years of reliable service. The price is just a few dollars more this week at both retailers.
If you don’t need (or want) a multi-router mesh setup, this single-unit WiFi 6 model from Netgear should be near the top of your list. It aced our throughput tests at all distances and was easy to set up via a smartphone app or an old-school, web-based wizard.
Starlink Starlink Standard Kit
The Standard Kit includes everything you need to use Starlink, a satellite-based broadband internet serviced created by SpaceX. Because it uses satellites, you can get a fast internet connection just about anywhere you have clear line of sight to the sky, whether that’s your weekend home in the mountains or in a rural area without any other broadband options (which describes my situation). And yes, you can easily use your own router by connecting it via an Ethernet cable and tweaking some settings in the Starlink app.
