    Detailed Test Results

Printing The Canon imageClass LBP113w prints using laser technology, which picks up powdered 'toner' on a roller and fuses it to the paper with heat. It prints black-and-white text with Excellent quality, as we've come to expect from a laser printer. Text printing was reasonably fast, 15.8 pages per minute, costing 4 cents per page. It prints black-and-white graphics with some obvious defects, but OK for casual use, at 7.5 pages per minute, costing 10.6 cents per page. The capacity of the main paper tray is 150 sheets, a typical size.

Scanning and Copying This is a single-function printer. It lacks a built-in scanner/copier.

Controls and Display The printer has a 1.2-inch monochrome display screen.

Connectivity and Networking You can connect directly to a PC with a USB cable, or to your network router wirelessly with WiFi. There's a WiFi Auto-connect feature that makes it easy to link to your wireless router. Apple AirPrint is built in, to print wirelessly from Apple devices via your local network. You can also install an app on your smartphone or tablet, as another option for printing over your WiFi network.

Cost of Ownership and Toner When this section was last updated, the printer's purchase price was about $190, typical for a regular black and white laser printer. Printing uses up toner and the costs add up over time. This printer uses one cartridge. The Canon toner cartridge used in testing was the 047. At the time, its price was $65. We estimate the toner cartridge to last a long time—5 years—following a typical printing schedule of 348 text pages per year. After 2 years of typical use, we estimate the total equivalent cost to be $218, low for a mono laser. The estimated yearly cost is $14, which is generally typical—and also for this printer type, typical. The theoretical total cost after 5 years is $260.

Firmware updates are downloadable directly to your printer via a wired or wireless network (if internet capable). You can check your printer's firmware version, or upgrade to the latest firmware by either (1) running the Canon printer-update app installed on the PC, or (2) accessing the "Settings" section of the printer menu and navigating to the firmware update option.
