Sound quality:
Hisense's AX5125H has acceptable overall sound quality - this model reproduces music and dialog reasonably well despite the obvious shortcomings in its sound. With the EQ mode set to Movie, and the tone controls set to provide the most even tonal balance the bass has good impact and goes deep, but is a bit prominent and somewhat boomy. The midrange is fairly even, but is a somewhat grainy and a touch hazy and plasticky. The treble is fairly extended, but is a bit sizzly and smeared and a touch sibilant. This model does a decent job of recovering room ambience but the overall sound is a bit congested. The two channel sound stage extends somewhat above and to the sides of the speaker array but lacks depth.
There was no significant difference in sound quality between HDMI, optical, Aux, USB, and Bluetooth inputs.
Multichannel
When playing Dolby digital 5.1 channel program material with the rear surround speakers properly positioned behind the listener and their volume levels properly adjusted the sound stage sounds taller and wider and, depending on the program material, may even envelope the listener on the sides and to the rear; however it still lacks some depth.
Dolby Atmos
When playing Dolby Atmos material the width and height of the sound stage expands and depending on the program material can fill the entire room; audio imaging can extend overhead from the front to the back of the room depending on the program material as well as to the sides and rear.
Sound Modes
Regardless of the type of program material being played the various sound modes had a noticeable effect on the sound field and/or tonal balance.
