    Detailed Test Results

Sound quality: Onn's 42" 5.1. 2. Dolby Atmos Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer Fair overall sound quality - this model has sonic shortcomings that leave a lot to be desired when listening to music but don't rule it out for dialog. In the Standard sound mode, the bass has good impact and goes deep, but is slightly prominent and somewhat boomy. Midrange is a bit nasal, somewhat grainy, hazy, and congested, and has a noticeable plastic resonance. Treble is uneven; the lower and mid-treble is somewhat subdued while the upper is a bit prominent and somewhat smeared and sizzly. Does a so-so job of recovering room ambience and sounds somewhat congested. When playing back stereo program material the sound field extends a bit above but not beyond the sides of the soundbar, and there is no sense of depth. The various sound modes have little, if any, effect on the tonal balance or sound field. When 5.1 channel program material is played in the Standard sound mode, the sound field extends somewhat above and a bit beyond the sides of the soundbar, but there is still no sense of depth. While the Movie sound mode expands the sound field well above and to the sides of the sound bar, the other sound modes have very little effect on the tonal balance of program material played through the HDMI and optical inputs (the inputs for 5.1 channel source material). When playing Dolby Atmos material in the Standard sound mode the width and height of the sound field expands, and depending on the program material, can fill the front end of the room; the sound field can extend up and above from the front of the room to directly overhead; however, there was no rear surround effect, and sounds that should have been in the rear come from the front. The various sound modes have a very subtle, if any, effect on the tonal balance and do not affect the sound field for program material played through the HDMI inputs (the inputs for Dolby Atmos source material). There was no significant difference in sound quality between the HDMI, optical, and analog inputs; USB, Bluetooth, and Airplay inputs have a slightly harsher sounding treble than HDMI. Dolby Atmos program material can only be played when the soundbar is directly connected to video player via an HDMI connection, or when it is used with a TV that has a HDMI ARC connection that supports Dolby Digital+ or a HDMI eARC connection that supports Dolby Digital+ or Dolby Digital TrueHD. The system can provide satisfying volume in a medium sized room.
