Sound quality: Samsung's HW-S40T/ZA delivers sound quality that fall in the Good range. In the standard sound mode bass has decent impact, but is a bit subdued, and the deep bass is lacking. Midrange is a touch nasal, a bit hazy, and somewhat grainy and congested. Treble is fairly extended, but is slightly subdued and smeared. Does a decent job of recovering room ambience, but sounds somewhat congested. With stereo program material sound field extends a bit above and somewhat beyond the width of the speaker array, but lacks front to back depth. The other Sound mode settings had a noticable effect on the sound field and tonal balance. In the Standard sound mode with Dolby digital multi-channel program material the sound image may extend well past past the sides and above the soundbar, but still lacks depth. The other sound mode settings had a noticable effect on the sound field and tonal balance. There was no significant difference in sound quality between the optical and Bluetooth inputs. The system can provide satisfying volume in a medium sized room.
