Sound quality: Sony's HT-G700 delivers sound quality that fall in the Fair range. With the Sound mode effects turned off (Effects set to No in menu) the bass has decent impact, goes fairly deep, and is somewhat boomy. Midrange is grainy, hazy, congested and telephone like. Treble is thin, somewhat dry and papery (like two pieces of paper rubbing together), and somewhat sizzly. Does a so-so job of recovering room ambience and sounds congested. When playing back stereo program material the sound field does not extend much above or beyond the sides of speaker array, and there is no sense of depth. The various sound modes have noticeable effect on the sound field and tonal balance. When 5.1 channel program material the sound field extends somewhat above or beyond the sides of speaker array, but there is still no sense of depth. The various sound modes have noticeable effect on the sound field and tonal balance. With Dolby Atmos or DTS:X program material the width and height of the sound field expands, and depending on the program material can extend well beyond the sides and well above the top of the soundbar, but there is still no sense of depth. The various sound modes have noticeable effect on the sound field and tonal balance. There was no significant difference between the HDMI, optical, and Bluetooth inputs. Dolby Atmos program material can only be played when the soundbar directly connected to video player via an HDMI connection or when it is used with a TV that has a HDMI ARC connection that supports Dolby Digital+ or a HDMI eARC connection that supports Dolby Digital+ or Dolby Digital TrueHD. The system can provide satisfying volume in a medium sized room.
