Detailed Test Results

Sound quality:

Vizio's M512e-K6 has very good overall sound quality - although it has some noticeable sonic quirks, this model reproduces music and dialog very well. In the Music sound mode with the tone controls set to provide the most even tonal balance the bass has good impact and goes deep, but is a bit prominent and boomy. Midrange is fairly even but is somewhat grainy, a touch hazy, and has a bit of a plastic resonance. Treble is extended but is a bit prominent and sizzly. Does a good job of recovering room ambience but is a touch congested. With stereo program material the two channel sound field extends somewhat above and a bit beyond the sides of the speaker array and lacks depth.

There was no significant difference in sound quality between the optical, aux, USB and Bluetooth inputs.

The system can provide satisfying volume in a medium sized room.

Sound Modes (Stereo)

The various sound modes have a significant effect on the sound quality. The Virtual X mode makes the sound louder, more echoey, extends it more up toward the ceiling, and makes the sound field somewhat wider.

Multichannel

With 5.1 multi-channel material the sound field is noticeably wider and taller with than with stereo program material.

Sound Modes (Multichannel)

The various sound modes have a significant effect on the sound quality. The Virtual X mode makes the sound louder, more echoey, extends it more up toward the ceiling, and makes the sound field somewhat wider.

Dolby Atmos

When playing Dolby Atmos material the width and height of the sound stage expands and depending on the program material can fill the entire room; audio imaging can extend overhead from the front to the back of the room depending on the program material as well as to the sides and rear.

DTS:X

When playing DTS:X material the width and height of the sound stage expands and depending on the program material can fill the entire room; audio imaging can extend overhead from the front to the back of the room depending on the program material as well as to the sides and rear.

TV ease of use: Very good overall.

Features ease of use: Acceptable overall.
