Waffle Maker
Chefman Anti-Overflow Belgian Waffle Maker

CR’s take: The Chefman was the only waffle maker in our tests to snag a CR Best Buy designation. For far less money than most of the competition, this machine churns out evenly browned round waffles. It garners a Very Good rating for its color-range settings, meaning there’s a remarkable difference between waffles made on the darkest setting (brown and crispy) and lightest setting (light and fluffy).

    Toaster
Hamilton Beach 2-slice Modern Chrome 22791

CR’s take: Its performance and price make the Hamilton Beach 2-slice Modern Chrome 22791 a CR Best Buy. And this toaster is sleek and attractive, unlike some models in this price range. It earns an Excellent rating in our toasting-time tests. Features include wide slots along with settings for bagels and defrosting.

      Cast Iron Frying Pan
Artisanal Kitchen Supply Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet (Bed Bath Beyond)

CR’s take: The Artisanal aces our browning tests, earning an Excellent rating and making perfect scallops. It was just as good at searing a steak, too. It baked cornbread that was moist and golden brown. The downsides: This pan wasn’t great at heating up evenly, and at 8.3 pounds, it’s the heaviest in our tests, which means that when someone picks it from a stack of wrapped gifts, it’ll have major heft.

        Coffee Maker
        Hamilton Beach 12-cup Programmable 49465R

CR’s take: An extraordinary value, this inexpensive drip coffee maker beat dozens of pricier models in CR’s battery of tests. Brew performance is Excellent, and it can be programmed to have piping fresh coffee waiting in the morning.

          Smart Speaker
          Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Generation)

CR’s take: The latest Dot is smaller and sleeker than its predecessor, with a fashionable fabric covering and, more important, significantly better sound. The list price is $50, but it’s frequently discounted well below that, making the tiny Dot the cheapest way into the Amazon ecosystem.

            Instant Camera
            Fujifilm Instax Mini 9

CR’s take: Whoever gets the Fujifilm Instax 9 in their stocking will start having fun immediately. The Mini 9 spits out physical photo prints with the slightly overexposed look of old Polaroids, giving people and faces the gauzy haze of a good time that plenty of smartphone camera apps try to fake digitally. And the price makes it ideal for a gift or even a bulk buy for a holiday party.

              Stereo Headphones
              Jabra Move Style Edition

CR’s take: The Jabra Move Style Edition, an on-ear Bluetooth model with a sleek appearance and better-than-average sound quality, comes with convenient features like controls for calls, playback, and volume, and the option to forgo Bluetooth and use the detachable audio cable included with your purchase. The headphones have a closed, isolating design that will keep some noise from leaking in or out during a listening session.

                Air Fryer
                GoWISE GW22731

CR’s take: A CR Best Buy, the GoWise GW22731 has a measured capacity of 4.9 quarts. Its touch buttons and programmed settings are among the easiest to see and use, earning an Excellent rating in our assessment. And this is one of the quietest air fryers we tested. The exterior’s crevices and the basket’s nooks and crannies take some effort to clean, however. It comes with a one-year warranty.

                  Multi-Cooker
                  Instant Pot DUO60 7-in-1 6 Quart

CR’s take: The Instant Pot Duo is half the price of some of its competition, and it performs similarly to its more expensive sibling, the Instant Pot Max. It earns an Excellent rating for pressure cooking and can hold its own against a Crock-Pot in the slow-cooking department, too, though it may require more time. It also takes up less space than even the smallest slow cookers from our ratings.

                    Wireless Speaker
                    Sonos One SL

CR’s take: The Sonos One SL is the company’s new entry-level wireless speaker and the least expensive speaker in the Sonos line. It replaces the existing Play:1, which was similar in size and price. The One SL is essentially a Sonos One smart speaker without the microphones that allow it to listen for a wake word. Our testers confirmed that the One SL sounds almost identical to the Sonos One.

                      Noise-Canceling Headphones
                      Amazon Echo Buds

CR’s take: Amazon’s Echo Buds have many of the same benefits of Apple’s new noise-canceling AirPods Pro, but they’re a lot cheaper. The Echo buds come with noise-canceling technology designed in collaboration with Bose, and feature hands-free integration with Alexa. Amazon claims the Echo Buds have 5 hours’ worth of battery life, and the included case has a built-in battery that will recharge the headphones four times on the go. (CR doesn’t test battery life in headphones.) With a Very Good rating for sound quality and superb noise reduction, they’re a decent choice for the more critical listener for both music and movie soundtrack playback.

                        Tablet
                        Apple iPad Mini (64GB) - 2019

CR’s take: Apple’s updated iPad Mini delivers a 7.9-inch tablet that not only tops our ratings of sub-8-inch tablets but does so with a huge amount of daylight between it and its nearest-scoring competitors. The display, arguably the single most important part of a tablet, is bright and accurate, and has a large viewing angle. That means you don’t need to look at the dead center to see the clearest image. The 10-hour battery life and performance for browsing the web and copying files are also best in class.

                          Robotic Vacuum
                          Eufy 30C

CR’s take: The Eufy 30C is an extremely quiet vacuum. Our testers note that they couldn’t even tell it was on or running, which makes it a great choice for those who might need to run a robotic vac while they’re home. This is one of the cheaper vacuums that really does the job: It earns an Excellent rating for bare floors. Like the LG Hom-Bot, this vacuum is compatible with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa; you can also program the robot through the manufacturer’s app.

                            Dutch Oven
                            Le Creuset Signature Dutch Oven

CR’s take: The 5.5-quart Le Creuset Signature tops our ratings in this category. It earns an Excellent rating in our browning tests, the only Dutch oven to do so, and is a cinch to clean. It weighs 12 pounds, less than most, and has an 8-inch cooking diameter. The loop handles are nice and wide.

                              55-Inch TV
                              LG OLED55C9PUA

CR’s take: The 55-inch 2019 LG OLED55C9PUA earns top scores for HD and UHD picture quality and does great when it comes to HDR, or high dynamic range, performance. (LG 4K TVs support several HDR formats used by content creators: HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, and Advanced HDR by Technicolor.) Like all OLED TVs, this model has an almost unlimited viewing angle, and the sound is also top-notch, among the best we’ve tested. LG’s updated smart TV platform includes its own voice-enabled ThinQ artificial intelligence platform as well as built-in support for the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa digital voice assistants.
