A good tinted lip balm should provide hydration and color (but not too much), be easy to apply without a mirror, and not be as shiny as a gloss—a big ask.

Winter is tough on the lips. The blast of the heater, the colds and congestion that force occasional mouth-breathing (gross), and the wind that strips any semblance of naturally occurring moisture from the skin. On the East Coast, at least, I spend much of November through March as a desiccated husk with lips that flake and sometimes crack. Having grown up on the West Coast, though, where summer temperatures reached over 100° F on the reg and where hot, dry breezes made my lips feel like they’d spent weeks without water in Death Valley, I can attest that dry weather isn’t limited to winter in much of the U.S.

    More on Personal Care

A lip balm, then, is absolutely essential to ward off the worst of bad weather’s devastation. A transparent lip balm is an excellent choice for every day, and, to be honest, every night. But sometimes you need something a bit punchier. Something fun. Something that pulls double duty as a protector and an adornment.

Four CR staffers tested 10 tinted lip balms for comfort, hydration, and other criteria to determine which ones you should keep around during the driest seasons of the year (and beyond).
