An retro-style cruiser with an attractive leather seat and handlebar grips, the Model Y is, a comfortable, smooth-riding bike. Unfortunately, the version CR tested had a single-speed setup with high gearing that was great for fast downhill pedaling, but made the bike very difficult to pedal even on flat ground. Anyone interested in this model should consider spending the approximately $200 extra to order a seven-speed gearset. There are other upgrades available—a torque sensing motor controller, a bigger battery, front suspension, seat suspension, bright colors etc.—that would undoubtedly make this a really nice bike to use and ride, but they can easily push its overall price past the $4,000 mark. There are five levels of assist that probably work well with the seven-speed setup, but only the strongest level did much to get the single-speed model moving.
