    One
The Lectric One is an intriguing bike with many innovative features, including an easily-adjustable locking handlebar, a user-configurable automatic gearbox, and a quiet rubber drive belt in place of the conventional chain. The handlebar can be pivoted up and back toward the rider for a more upright riding position, or down and toward the front of the bike for a more wind-cheating leaned-forward position. The gearbox shifts automatically and can be configured through an app to start and top out in the gear of the rider’s choosing, as well as to keep the rider’s pedaling as close to a certain cadence (similar to revolutions per minute in an engine) as possible. Start pedaling, and the gearbox ticks steadily through the gears until you reach coasting speed, at which point it shifts to the top gear for slower turnover when you resume pedaling. You can also shift the gears manually with handlebar-mounted buttons that resemble the shifters on conventional bikes. The powerful electric motor is activated either by pedaling or by using a handlebar-mounted thumb lever. Pedal assist is most effective for ascending steep hills, as the motor can run out of steam using only the throttle lever and battery power. In form, the Lectric One most closely resembles a small-wheeled folding commuter bike, although the Lectric One’s frame doesn’t fold. Without electric power, pedaling feels a little restrained, particularly when climbing a hill. The bike’s handlebar stem folds down and the seat stows to make it shorter for storage, but at 62 pounds, the Lectric One may be a bit heavy for many riders to lift without assistance. And although the bike is relatively stable while underway, its small wheels make the steering a little twitchy at lower speeds. This is most noticeable during emergency braking, under which it’s easy to lock up the hydraulic disc brakes and put the back wheel into a skid. Even so, the Lectric One offers a smooth, comfortable ride, and the full-color display screen is large and easy to see. It also includes a built-in headlamp and brake light.
