The Paselec is among the least expensive of the electric mountain bikes CR has tested. With strong acceleration, it feels relatively fast on flat terrain with e-assist. It also cruises well without electric power on flat terrain, although hills are another story. But this is more of a dirt-road bike than a serious mountain bike because the brakes aren’t up to par for steep downhills, although they do perform well on CR’s less demanding road course. build quality is subpar. The brakes on this model were so bad during the trail riding portion of our testing that they began smoking on a steep downhill section. (Imagine the implications of falling into a pile of dry leaves when your bike has smoldering brakes.) The G9 has a bigger screen than some of the other cheaper models, but for some reason, it also has a ’90s-style lever shifter for gear selection. The range of gearing isn’t good; the bike doesn’t have a deep enough low gear, meaning if it runs out of juice, the rider would struggle to ascend a steep hill. This model also has a front wheel rake angle that makes it feel wobbly when going downhill.

The Paselec G9 electric mountain bike is, overall, a very good choice. This hub-drive bike has its electric motor located within the rear wheel's hub, which doesn't allow the e-assist to use the bike's mechanical gearing for more effective climbing, cruising, and getting through difficult terrain. It also has cable-pull disc brakes, which don't work as well as hydraulic disc brakes, especially on long downhills.
