Beaumont Rev 2 - Step Through
The Retrospec Beaumont Rev 2 Step Through is relatively inexpensive, but offers strong power assist from its hub-mounted electric motor. Power assist is activated either by pedaling or with a handlebar-mounted thumb lever, and has five levels (there’s no difference in intensity; lower levels simply provide full assist to a lower top speed, while the top level gives full power all the way up to about 20 mph). There is adequate power to climb hills without pedaling, but the bike may slow to a crawl on steeper grades. The riding position is relaxed and upright, and the cushy seat and wide handlebars contribute to a laid-back feel. Despite these upsides, along with strong braking performance from the mechanical disc brakes, the ride quality is harsh, and even the smallest road imperfections transmit from the bike’s frame into the rider’s body. Furthermore, the steering is a little too twitchy to inspire maximum confidence, and the cable operated brakes—hydraulic discs have become the industry standard for heavy e-bikes—are likely to stretch out over time, reducing braking performance without frequent service. Pedaling without electric assist is noticeably more difficult than on a conventional bike with no electric powertrain, but it is better than some e-bikes. The handlebar-mounted display screen matches the pricetag, and consists of a rudimentary array of red LED indicator lights. These are used to show the level of assistance, and can be difficult to see in full sunshine.
