No matter your fitness level, an exercise bike offers a low-impact cardio workout that can be as casual or intense as you want. The best bikes can be precisely adjusted to fit a variety of body shapes and sizes, offer a safe and stable ride, and have an intuitive interface that makes it easy to choose the workout you want.

    More on fitness at home

CR currently tests three kinds of exercise bikes: upright bikes, recumbent bikes, and indoor cycling or studio bikes.

Upright bikes are more traditional stationary bikes that you generally use in an upright position. Recumbent bikes allow you to sit in a more reclined (recumbent) position with your back supported and the pedals positioned out in front of you. Indoor cycling bikes are meant to more closely mimic the feeling of riding a road bike in an aerodynamic, crouched position, and their heavy flywheel provides both momentum and resistance, so pedaling feels more realistic (these are also called spin bikes, from the brand Spinning, or sometimes studio bikes).

Some bikes of each kind also have built-in systems to connect to on-demand or live exercise classes. In most cases, you’ll need to purchase a separate subscription to an exercise app in order to access these workouts or classes.

    How CR Tests Exercise Bikes

Our testers evaluate each exercise bike for a number of different factors that are likely to influence users’ satisfaction with their machines long-term. For all three types of bikes, we assess adjustability, including how finely you can adjust the bike’s seat height and position to get a comfortable ride, and how wide a range of user heights the bike can comfortably fit (for recumbent bikes, we call this the rider fit range). We also assess all three kinds of bikes’ displays for how intuitive and easy to use they are.

For upright and recumbent bikes, we also judge the comfort of the seat, the level of stability each bike provides, and the variety of its programming. For indoor cycling bikes, we assess each bike’s noise level, evaluate how easy it is to assemble, and score it on its weight capacity, warranty, and range of features.
