Aldi Recalls Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing

The product might put consumers at risk for botulism

Heads up, Aldi shoppers: The grocery chain, along with the manufacturer of Simply Nature Organic Poppy Seed Dressing, has recalled one lot of the product because it could potentially be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. The recall was announced by the Food and Drug Administration on Sept. 16. No illnesses have been reported.

The 12-ounce glass bottles of dressing have the UPC code 4099100023169 on the shoulder of the bottle and a “best if used by” date of Feb. 16, 2023.

The product was distributed to select Aldi stores in 30 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

    More on Food Safety

In a notice on Aldi’s website, the supermarket chain said it immediately removed the product from stores. Aldi did not immediately return a request for comment.

"Only a very small number of affected bottles likely made it to store shelves, most product was removed at the warehouse level," said a spokesperson for Drew Organics, the manufacturer of the dressing. The company recalled the product after workers noticed a color difference in the product after it was manufactured, and "testing revealed that it did not meet our required PH specifications," the spokesperson said. The PH was such that the product could support the growth of microbes, including Clostridium botulinum. However, the spokesperson said no Clostridium botulinum was detected.

The Clostridium botulinum bacteria produces a toxin that causes botulism. “Many people think botulism is a problem only with canned foods, but if the conditions are right, the bacteria can grow in food packed in glass containers, too,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety and testing at Consumer Reports. Symptoms can include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness, in addition to vomiting and diarrhea.
