California Dairies supplies upward of 40 percent of the U.S. market for dried milk powder and has recalled more than a hundred batches of the product. “These recalls show how even a single ingredient, provided by a single supplier, can affect so many different food products,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of food safety at CR.

Other products containing the milk powder from California Dairies, including pizza and pork rinds, were the subject of a recent public health alert by the Department of Agriculture, which said it “expects additional downstream products will be identified as this ingredient recall progresses.”

California Dairies did not immediately respond to CR’s request for comment.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in people with compromised immune systems, very young children, and older adults. In otherwise healthy adults, symptoms can include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and fever.

“Check your pantry for these recalled products and throw them away or return them for a refund,” says CR’s Rogers. “Better to be safe than sorry.”

If you have questions about either of these recalls, you can call l Utz customer service at 877-423-0149 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or John B. Sanfilippo & Son at 800-874-8734 between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
