4 Best Conditioners, Evaluated and Reviewed

We tried 12 products from Cécred, Grow-Good, L’Oréal Paris, Olaplex, and more to find our faves. Spoiler: Conditioners for “all hair types” are not for all.

I wish I were one of those people who just pick up any old conditioner at the store. Before I try a new hair conditioner (or any personal care product, really), I spend way too long in the hair care aisle, reading, smelling, and comparing bottles. Sometimes, even after all that, I end up hating the product I buy.

For me, the ideal conditioner is moisturizing and budget-friendly. And, according to results from an August 2026 nationally representative Consumer Reports survey of 2,580 U.S. adults, I’m not alone. Price and moisturizing ability were the top two most important factors people who condition their hair at least weekly said they consider when shopping for hair conditioners.

Because I have curly hair, I also look for products that specifically call out my hair type. Again, Americans in our survey agreed, with 27 percent saying that selecting a product designed for their hair type or texture was among the three most important factors when shopping, after price and moisturizing ability.

I’ve seen products purported to be for all hair types, but I’d never actually tried one myself. To determine whether these conditioners truly worked for everyone, we sent 12 of them home with a panel of four testers with different hair types (see full descriptions). After using each product, they answered questions about how easy it was to detangle their hair, how their hair felt after rinsing, whether they liked the scent, and how easy each product was to use.

To find a conditioner that may work best for your hair type, first look at the “Meet Our Testers” section. Then look for the name of the tester with hair most similar to yours under each product write-up. You’ll find all the details from their at-home testing there.

Selecting hair care products is a highly personal choice. What works for one person might not for another, even when they share the same hair type. It’s no surprise that we had a hard time picking our favorites, as our panelists agreed on very little after trying these conditioners. And it wasn’t just based on how the products worked. Things that seem more straightforward, like a product’s scent, were difficult to agree on too.

Sneak peek: It wasn’t a total surprise to us, but we were still disappointed to find that none of these conditioners marketed as “for all hair types” actually worked for all our panelists’ hair. Instead of naming a Top Pick for all hair types, we based our recommendations on the top two qualities that conditioner users in our survey said were most important when they shop for hair conditioners: price and moisturizing ability. We also highlighted a few celebrity brands.

Jodhaira Rodriguez (me, your writer) has long curly hair. I use conditioner every time I wash my hair, about every three to four days or so. My ideal conditioner must provide enough slip to detangle my hair easily and leave my usually dry hair feeling moisturized and soft. Also important is a conditioner’s scent. I prefer strong, floral fragrances that linger on my strands for a few days.

Lisa Fogarty has semi-long hair that sits a few inches below her shoulders. She describes it as loose waves that can easily be straightened. Her hair is fine to medium and can get dry. She conditions her hair every time she shampoos it—about three to four times a week.

Justin Krajeski has very thick, short hair. He is currently in the process of growing it out. “It’s not exactly curly, but it isn’t straight. I guess you could call it wavy when it’s grown out.” He tries to condition his hair every day, per his barber’s recommendation, and shampoos about once a week.

Eliana (not pictured) is the young daughter of CR editor Ginger Cowles. She has very dry, fine, coarse hair that reaches her midback. Ginger washes and detangles her hair once a week. Ginger applied each conditioner in this story to Eliana’s hair and left it on for 30 minutes to give it the best chance to work.
