Lip masks are thick, sometimes sticky, and claim to hydrate overnight to alleviate dry, flaky lips. We tested 10 popular products to find out which gave us the softest, smoothest lips by morning.

Whom among us hasn’t woken up early after a night of breathing dry air and discovered cracked, craggly lips? The driest night I ever spent was in the high desert of New Mexico, but congested nights in New York apartments with radiators cranked up to the max definitely rank up there.

The solution: lip masks. These lip products are basically super-thick lip balms, designed to last through the night so you wake up with some hydration still in your lips. They’re typically too thick to be comfortably worn through the day, though a couple we tried are buildable, so you can adjust the amount of product depending on use case.

We tried 10 lip masks during a remarkably cold and snowy East Coast winter and put them through their paces to find the ones that actually last through a dry, congested (aka mouth-breathing) night. We’ve also included each winning product’s score from SkinSafe, an organization that uses Mayo Clinic data to assess the number of top allergens in personal care and cleaning products.

Angela Lashbrook (that’s me!) is a writer at CR. I have dry skin as a general rule, and frequently have chapped, flaky lips.

Justin Krajeski is a writer at Consumer Reports. He has normal skin that doesn’t get too dry or oily most of the time; in winter, he occasionally gets chapped lips and regularly uses Chapstick.
