But even aluminum foil has its weaker forms. Some of them tear too easily, so you end up with half of what you want and a jagged edge, or they rip from the slightest touch when you’re lifting cookies from a foil-lined baking sheet. (By the way, unless you’re using nonstick aluminum foil, using either the shiny or dull side is fine for cooking on.)

We tested 12 rolls of aluminum foil, in both standard and heavy-duty varieties, to find the ones that are easy to rip yet sturdy against punctures.
