Alert

Consumer Reports rates the optional TimeCutter MX & SWX Twin Bagger (79395) for this mower a Don’t Buy: Safety Risk because its installation requires unbolting its discharge chute/deflector, which exposes the cutting blade. Toro advises against operating the product without the discharge deflector or bagging tube, but CR believes if the bagging tube repeatedly clogs in thick or tall grass a consumer could foreseeably use the mower without the tube installed, posing a laceration and thrown-objects risk (when a blade contacts things like rocks and sticks, they can become dangerous projectiles). If you already own the bagging kit, we suggest you stop using it, reinstall the discharge deflector assembly, and mow in the side-discharge or mulching mode.

About

The Toro MX5000 74773 is part of the Lawn Mowers and Tractors test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Riding lawn mower & tractor models like the MX5000 74773 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Side discharging: A high score means clippings are dispersed evenly and far from the discharge chute. A top-scoring model prevents clumps, leaving your lawn looking clean and well-cut.

Mulching: A high score means the mower produces finer clippings and spreads them evenly across the lawn. A top-scoring model leaves little visible residue and helps maintain a neat, healthy yard.

Bagging: A high score means the mower's bag holds more grass clippings. A top-scoring model needs emptying less often and handles big jobs more easily.
