A leaf blower can ease the job of moving leaves and twigs from your yard, or even quickly dust off sandy decks in summer or clear powdery snow in winter. Stronger leaf blowers can be a tool of choice for cleaning out gutters or moving along pine cones or other objects.
When shopping for a new leaf blower, consider the tasks you’ll use it for and the size of your yard. Consumer Reports has more than 85 leaf blowers in our ratings, available to CR members. These include handheld, backpack, and wheeled varieties. Our scores for these models are derived from the results of our expert testing as well as from the feedback we get from thousands of members about reliability and satisfaction.

Consumer Reports provides three types of information that can help members pick the best leaf blower for their situation.
Model performance: We capture the performance of individual models in our leaf blower ratings. If you see a leaf blower that you’re interested in, you can look it up in our ratings to see how well it performs core functions, like sweeping and loosening. CR also rates leaf blowers for battery run time, noise, and power, which is crucial for tougher jobs like clearing gutters.
Reliability: Each year, we survey hundreds of thousands of CR members about the products they buy and, in particular, how well those products hold up over time. We use the information to generate a brand-level predicted reliability score for nearly every type of leaf blower we test. We ask people how satisfied they are with their leaf blower over time, and also ask about maintenance and any problems. We use these responses to tabulate a brand-level Owner Satisfaction score. The results can be found in our ratings charts.
Brand-level performance: Brand scores reflect how well leaf blowers from a particular company perform in our testing and surveys, and whether they provide good value. The scores are not model-specific, but they can be a good backup if you’re interested in a particular model we haven’t tested yet. Just remember that a high brand score isn’t a guarantee that every model from that manufacturer is a winner. It’s possible for a company to earn a high score overall for its leaf blowers, even if it has a dud or two in its lineup. The reverse is also possible.
Best Battery Handheld Leaf Blower Brands
The best battery-powered leaf blowers perform just as well as, or even better than, gas. They handle well as a group, in part because they’re lighter than gas models. They’re also compatible with a particular battery platform, which means their batteries can be used with other power tools, such as string trimmers and lawn mowers, that can share the same battery. Those conveniences, plus the fact that battery versions are friendlier to the environment, are driving demand. Battery leaf blowers outsell their gas counterparts.
Our current ratings include more than 50 battery handheld leaf blowers and recommend well over half of them. While we don’t have enough data to include every company in these ratings, the analysis shows where big brands like Ego, Hart, Ryobi, and Toro fall.
