Perhaps thanks in part to the rise of direct-to-consumer boxed brands, CR’s latest member surveys have found that foams are the least expensive mattress option compared with the two other mattress categories we test—innerspring and adjustable air.

And as CR’s Martin Lachter reports, this is a big change from about 11 years ago, when high-end Tempur-Pedics dominated the foam market. What’s more, in Consumer Reports’ 2024 mattress brand comfort and satisfaction ratings of 60,739 mattresses, members owning foam mattresses were more likely than those owning innerspring mattresses to describe the comfort of their bed as excellent.
