Foam mattresses are best known for their cushiony feel, but there’s actually more variation to them than you’d expect. Memory foam mattresses conform closely to your curves, allowing for a body-hugging sink. Latex mattresses have a subtle springy feel even as they cradle. Non-memory foam polyurethane foams offer something in between. And while foam mattresses, as a category, tend to be less breathable but more motion-isolating than innerspring mattresses, individual models slightly differ in those areas, too.

If these mattresses appeal to you, then you’ve got lots of models to choose from, no matter what your budget. Perhaps thanks in part to the rise of direct-to-consumer boxed brands, CR’s latest member surveys have found that foams are the least expensive mattress option compared with the two other mattress categories we test—innerspring and adjustable air.

And as CR’s Martin Lachter reports, this is a big change from about 11 years ago, when high-end Tempur-Pedics dominated the foam market. What’s more, in Consumer Reports’ 2024 mattress brand comfort and satisfaction ratings of 60,739 mattresses, members owning foam mattresses were more likely than those owning innerspring mattresses to describe the comfort of their bed as excellent.

If you’re on the hunt for a foam mattress, our roundup below is a great place to start. (But if you prefer the resilience of coils with varying degrees of foam, see our roundup of innerspring ratings, which includes hybrid mattresses.) Best Foam Mattress Overall

Our top overall pick provides support for a broad range of sleepers while also acing our other rigorous tests. It’s a favorite in our member surveys, too.
