Most mattresses are advertised as “on sale” all year long, which means their prices don’t tend to go much higher. It’s almost always better to wait for a bigger sale, such as a long holiday weekend like Memorial Day.

These discounts tend to improve by 5 to 10 percent, which may not seem like much, but when you’re buying a more expensive item, that difference can be over $100. And with Memorial Day less than two weeks away, most have already started their early holiday mattress sales. In some cases, the prices match the lowest I’ve seen, but some may get a little better closer to Memorial Day weekend. I track prices all year long, so I’ve highlighted which is which below.

If you’re not sure what mattress will best suit your sleeping style, see CR’s mattress buying guide. We’ve tested more than 200 models for supporting people of all sizes, whether you sleep on your side or your back. Our mattress selector can also help you narrow down your choices.

Below are prices for queen mattresses, and all other sizes are on sale.

The Essentia Stratami is one of the top performers in CR’s tests, especially if you sleep on your back. Unlike the other Essentia mattresses on this list, this one’s price has dropped significantly from last week, with an additional $583 in savings. This is the best price we’ve seen for this model. Mattress shoppers who come to Essentia for organic materials won’t be disappointed in the performance of the company’s natural rubber latex-based foam. This mattress performed excellently for petite and average-sized back sleepers. Large/tall back sleepers and all side sleepers will also find very good performance. The discount will apply automatically when you add the mattress to your cart.

Back sleepers who want an adjustable air mattress will find excellent support in the Sleep Number p6 smart bed, whether you’re petite or large and tall. It’s now about $250 less than you’ll see outside of major sales, making it a great time to buy. In our survey, CR members reported that the Sleep Number brand delivered excellent comfort and very good owner satisfaction. The model is fairly durable, with little sagging or softening over time, and testers found it to be very stable: One sleeper’s tossing shouldn’t bother a partner overnight.

Casper mattresses actually sell for full price most of the time, making these holiday weekend sales lucrative for shoppers. And right now, they’ve got a sitewide sale, giving you plenty of options to shop. The Casper Snow, for instance, is one of the least heat-retaining mattresses we’ve tested, making it great for those who sleep hot. Combining pocketed coils with layers of foam, this hybrid mattress is particularly supportive of back sleepers of all sizes and is also well-suited for petite to large side sleepers. With a firmness rating of 4 out of 10, the Casper Snow is on the softer side. Its excellent stability rating (an improvement from its previous iteration) means you should not feel vibrations from your partner’s movements.

Looking for something a little more luxurious? The Snow Max is available for a big discount as well. The scores they each got in our lab tests were comparable. The Max is a better choice for petite side sleepers, but otherwise they’re pretty similar in support and durability.

The Birch Natural mattress is 25 percent off as part of the brand’s Memorial Day mattress sale with the code MEMDAY25 (and it comes with two free pillows)—this is about $100 better than the typical price. It does well in CR’s tests, and if you’re a petite side sleeper, it may be an exceptional choice. It gets top scores in our tests for that category. It scores above average for all other sleepers, except large and tall side sleepers, who may want to look at other models.

Bear’s Memorial Day sales started early, and you can save 35 percent with the code MEMORIAL35. Typically, when there are no major events, the discount is 30 percent, and this is what we tend to see for holidays.

Bear mattresses like the Elite Hybrid get high marks for owner satisfaction and comfort in our exclusive member survey. The Elite Hybrid also gets near-perfect scores across the board for petite, average, and large and tall folks of all sleep styles. This, along with the Star Hybrid and the Pro Hybrid, earns the CR Recommended badge.

The Casper The One mattress wowed testers, earning top marks for its support of average and petite back sleepers. It also provided strong support for large and tall back sleepers and side sleepers of all sizes. This highly durable mattress receives a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale, so you can expect a medium-soft feel. You can also anticipate a pretty sound sleep regardless of your partner’s movements because it receives a very good score for stabilization. Casper foam mattresses tend to please their owners in terms of both comfort and owner satisfaction in our member surveys.

The 12-inch-thick Dream Supreme II Hybrid is 20 percent off right now—and it’s one of the few models that isn’t on sale that often. You just have to provide your name, email, and phone number to get the code (and you can unsubscribe from their marketing emails and texts anytime). The mattress features hundreds of movable foam cylinders of varying densities, allowing couples to customize firmness levels on the left and right sides to their liking. That personalization, however, does come at a price—we’re talking more than $4,000 for a queen. This high-end model offers great support for back and side sleepers of all heights and weights. Our tests found that it doesn’t retain heat.

This Bear mattress is also back to its typical holiday weekend sale price. A mattress purchase also includes two Cloud pillows, a sheet set, and a mattress protector at no extra cost. (The company typically includes only pillows outside of big sales like this.) The Bear Original foam mattress performs well in our tests, and it’s a good choice for back and side sleepers who are petite or of average height. (Tall folks may want to look elsewhere.) CR’s tests found that this mattress tends to retain heat, so it may be best for those who sleep cooler.

If you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Casper Dream is a solid pick, providing pressure relief and comfort to those who need it. It was recently about $100 less, but this is still a nice discount. In our lab evaluation, we found the model—a newbie to CR’s ratings—to be a standout for petite back sleepers, and it serves all other sizes and positions very well. The Dream scores well for durability, too, so you can expect to get sound sleep on it for eight to 10 years. If you sleep with a partner, you should feel very little vibration from their movement. CR members give Casper mattresses high marks for comfort and owner satisfaction.

The Dream Max is also on sale at Casper. These two are very similar, but the Max is a little thicker and more luxurious. It also gets a better score for petite side sleepers, but otherwise CR’s test results are similar for both models.

The discount for this mattress has remained unchanged for months, so you likely won’t find a better price. There are quite a few high-performing foam mattresses in our ratings that offer terrific side-sleeper support. This 10-inch-thick mattress-in-a-box is particularly appealing if you’re looking for the springy cushioning of latex but don’t want to spend more than $2,000 for it. (Many high scorers in our ratings cost much more than that, and this latex is GOLS-certified organic.) It earns a not-too-firm, not-too-soft score of 5 on our firmness scale. According to our tests, side sleepers—and those smaller-than-average in particular—receive terrific support. Back sleepers do just as well.

Back sleepers of all sizes will find superior support with this Sleep Number mattress—but wait until Memorial Day weekend. It was $100 less a week ago and may dip back down when the holiday rolls around. Side sleeper support isn’t shabby either. In addition to being solid, stable, and sturdy, it’s also an adjustable mattress in multiple ways. You can customize the firmness of this top performer, adjust its positioning if you opt for an adjustable frame, and modify its temperature settings. Say goodbye to night sweats and restless sleep, and hello to a breathable surface with top-tier comfort, according to CR members.

Brooklyn Bedding has mattresses, pillows, mattress toppers, sheets, and more. CR has tested a handful of the company’s products, including the Signature Hybrid mattress, which is 25 percent off with the code MEMORIAL25—this is the same discount we’ve been seeing for months, so there’s a small chance it could get a little better. This model is an exceptional choice for petite side sleepers; it got top marks in that category. And individuals with other body types and sleep styles may also be satisfied with it, as it scored above average in all our other tests. It was 30 percent off during the last big holiday, so if you check back in a week or two, you may be able to save more.

The Avocado Eco Organic sometimes reaches a 15 percent discount for the holidays, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen that deal. This innerspring mattress-in-a-box earns solid ratings in our tests for support for side and back sleepers. With a firmness score of 4 out of 10, it’s a much softer alternative to the Avocado Green mattress (which rates a 7 and also doesn’t retain heat) and even the Avocado Green Pillowtop (which rates a 5 and does retain heat). In our member surveys, Avocado innerspring mattresses earn very good ratings for both comfort and owner satisfaction.

The Layla Essential foam mattress, which is 9 inches thick, is a great lower-cost option if you’re in the market for a firm mattress—it’s $25 more than it was recently, so you may want to check back closer to Memorial Day to potentially save a little more. It earns CR’s top ratings for petite and average back sleepers and near-perfect scores for large back sleepers and petite side sleepers. Average and large side sleepers would find better support elsewhere, though. The mattress receives a firmness rating of 7 out of 10 in our tests. You may feel some vibrations from a fellow sleeper’s shifts; the model earns only a middling stability score. It also doesn’t retain heat. In our member surveys, Layla mattresses earn solid scores for comfort and owner satisfaction.

The Puffy Lux Hybrid innerspring/foam mattress-in-a-box is $250 more than its typical holiday sale price, so don’t buy this one just yet. Wait until closer to Memorial Day when the price typically drops down to $1,400. It comes through with above-average support for nearly every size and style of sleeper. The exception: large and tall back sleepers. The durability is impressive, but the stability is just average, which could leave sleepers feeling vibration from a partner’s movements. And this model doesn’t make shifting sleep positions easy. With a firmness rating of 1 out of 10, it’s quite soft.

Back sleepers of all sizes will appreciate that the Essentia Grateful Eight Organic mattress offers excellent support. Side sleepers will also find that it offers solid support. The price has dropped about $150, but we have seen it for $150 less than this, so wait until Memorial Day to potentially save more. This latex foam model from Essentia has excellent stability. But it weighs a hefty 111 pounds and has no grips, so you’ll need someone to help you move it. In our member surveys, Essentia’s foam models receive the highest possible rating for comfort and are just a tad shy of a top-tier mark for owner satisfaction. With a firmness level of 6 out of 10, the model is medium to medium-firm in feel. It’s among the eco-friendliest foam offerings in our ratings. The discount will apply automatically once you add it to your cart.

The 8-inch-thick Essentia Classic REM5 Organic provides very good support for side sleepers of all sizes and most of their back-sleeping partners, although smaller back sleepers may want to consider an alternative mattress. It’s still about $200 more than the usual holiday price, so wait until Memorial Day for a potentially better price. While CR members find Essentia foam mattresses to be quite comfortable, for this model in particular, that comfort comes at a pretty steep cost. The REM5 is made of organic latex foam, a material that tends to command a higher price due to its luxury status. Our tests show that this mattress doesn’t retain heat. With a firmness rating of 3 out of 10, the bed has a soft feel. You’ll get the discount once you add it to your cart.

This memory foam mattress from Sleepy’s is a CR Recommended model—it’s still the same price we see outside of holiday weekends, so check back to see if the deal gets better later this month. This mattress gets high marks for average and petite back sleepers, and above-average scores for all other sleeping types and body sizes. So if you prefer all memory foam and need a new bed, this could be a good option. Just note that it gets middling scores for stabilization and owner satisfaction.
