YONKERS, NY —Consumer Reports’ expert food testers evaluated 23 popular whole-milk yogurts and found some great choices from brands including Dannon Oikos, Fage, Liberté, Whole Foods, Brown Cow, Wallaby, and Chobani.
CR’s tests focused on four different whole-milk yogurt categories: regular and Greek products in two flavors, plain, and berry. Products from 15 yogurt producers were included. The other manufacturers were: Annie’s, Dreaming Cow, Great Value from Walmart, Maple Hill Creamery, Organic Valley, Siggi, Stonyfield, and Trader Joe’s.
Consumer Reports’ nutrition and food testing team rated the products for nutrition and taste, and combined those ratings to produce an Overall Score for each product. Here are the top two scoring products for each category tested:
In addition to the product ratings, CR’s report, “Is Whole-Milk Yogurt a Whole Lot Better?” examines the growing market for whole-milk yogurt and the emerging—but as yet inconclusive—evidence about the nutritional benefits of dairy fats. It also explores the issue of added sugars in some yogurts, and probes the benefits of products made with milk from grass-fed cows. Consumer Reports ratings include an overall score for each product, based on nutrition and taste that includes a “CR take” on flavor and texture. The nutrition score is based on values for energy density (calories per gram of food) total fat, saturated fat, sodium, sugars, iron, and calcium. Extra weighting is given for influential nutrients, either positive or negative, respective of the food. Taste ratings are based on the results of a blind tasting panel of trained sensory experts.
