Consumer Reports is notifying 251 people from our 36 million member records that their payment card number may have been inadvertently printed in the name or address line of their mailing label due to a technical error.
When we discovered this error we immediately worked to investigate, assess and correct the root cause, as well as put preventative measures in place to help ensure this will not happen again.
Consumer Reports has long stood for working together with consumers to create a fairer, safer, and healthier world. Today this means creating clear rules and marketplace principles to address the biggest consumer challenge we now face: ensuring our data privacy and security.
These principles must begin with acting responsibly, swiftly, and with transparency when anyone’s data is exposed, whether it be inadvertent or due to bad actors, and we will continue to hold ourselves equally to this standard, for our members and for all consumers.
As always, we recommend that everyone monitor their financial accounts by periodically verifying recent transactions and reviewing their monthly statements, and reporting any unauthorized activity to their financial institution.
