The best makers of full-sized luggage offer bags that are a breeze to pack, painless to carry, easy to wheel around, an appropriate weight, and durable. After all, when you buy a medium-sized or large suitcase—the kind of luggage you check before boarding—you want it to get you through dozens or even hundreds of excursions, by air, land and sea.

Consumer Reports members understand that. When we recently surveyed more than 20,000 of them about their experiences with luggage brands, nearly half said they’d kept their most-used bag for three to seven years. Twenty-six percent have owned their bag for 10 years or more. American Tourister, Samsonite and Travelpro—mainstream companies offering a variety of styles, sizes, materials, and warranties, and price ranges—were the most commonly-owned checked-luggage names.

But those weren’t the best checked-luggage brands.

Those honors go to high-end brands that sell just a few styles of checked bags. What also distinguishes them are generous warranties that cover every bag they sell.
