You know what we think at Consumer Reports: Your pets deserve the best. That’s why we spend hours identifying the best pet products. We also think your pet’s owners (to be clear, that includes you) deserve to pay the best price for those products, which is why, on weeks like this one, we take time to find high-quality deals.
Amazon’s Prime Day starts today and runs until Friday, June 26. We’ll be scouring the web for the best deals on highly rated pet products, so you’re aware of what’s on sale, from automatic dog feeders to cat litter boxes.
Sure, we continue to see pet products dip below their usual cost on Amazon. But we’re not limiting ourselves to one retailer. Others, like Walmart, Chewy, BJ’s, and more, are competing with Amazon’s sales and offering low prices, too.
We’ll keep our ears to the ground to identify great deals for your pet and yourself. Check out our Deals hub to find our latest Prime Day coverage and all the discounts we’re tracking, from Walmart to Best Buy.
Dog Beds
Casper Dog Bed
Casper, the same company that sells mattresses, designed its Casper Dog Bed, which is $139 to $249 depending on size, with two layers of foam construction (including memory foam), a soft nylon-polyester-olefin cover that fits tightly over its rectangular cushion, and raised bolsters around all four sides. While our first impression of the FurHaven bed was “soft” and “cozy,” this pick has a sturdier and more structured appearance and feel. The cover is removable and machine-washable and comes in three sizes to accommodate dogs up to 90 pounds. (We wish it was offered in a larger size to suit really big breeds.) Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial and a one-year limited warranty, so you have the option of returning the bed if your dog doesn’t take to it.
Le Sure Cat Bed
A comfortable bed for your pet that can add a fun pop of color to your space sounds like a win-win. CR writer Jodhaira Rodriguez recommends this cat bed, which her cat Frank “barely fits in (because he is a very big boy that I am way overfeeding), but I find him here every time I come home.”
Purrfectiion Anti-Anxiety Fluffy Cat Bed
“I succumbed to Instagram ads for this impossibly fluffy cat bed, and it did not disappoint,” says CR health and science writer Catherine Roberts. “I can’t speak to the anti-anxiety claims, but both our cats love it and play subtle mind games over which one of them gets to claim it for days at a time. I also got one for my friends’ very picky cat, and she turned out to love it, too.” This cat bed is available in four sizes and five colors. “I prefer the unicorn rainbow ice cream color. I wish they made it in human size,” says Roberts.
Dog Treats
Pawstruck Bully Stick Springs
CR’s Lauren Kiesel has a 6-month-old cockapoo who loves these bully sticks. The high-protein springs are meant to occupy pups as they gnaw their way through the treat. “The curliness makes it easier to grasp, longer to eat, and fun,” Kiesel says.
Puzzle Feeders
Cat Amazing Puzzle Feeder
Here’s one item that will help keep your feline occupied when you’re otherwise engaged. “My 10-year-old cat, Frannie, is obsessed with playing, and even more obsessed with treats,” says CR’s shopping managing editor, Mary Beth Quirk. “So when I’m busy working at home and can’t entertain her, I’ll throw some treats in this puzzle box, and it keeps her entertained. Sometimes, she destroys the box in the process, which is fine because it’s cardboard, so we just recycle it and order a new one.”
Lukito 3-Piece Lick Mat for Dogs and Cats
Pair this lickable food mat with a delectable treat to keep your kitty content and happily occupied. Quirk, one of CR’s shopping editors, spreads Churu purée treats on the mat with the spatula provided and attaches them to her cat Frannie’s food tray with the suction cups on the bottom. “She’ll spend minutes on end cleaning out every nook and cranny, leaving me to work in peace,” she says.
Ethical Pet Seek-A-Treat Flip N Slide Puzzle Dog Toy
Aside from serving as a stimulating activity for pets, puzzle treat dispensers can be a great way to encourage slow(ish) snacking. Nicky Besuden, CR’s associate director of new ventures, recommends this dynamic treat dispenser: “My dog loves all the treat puzzles.”
Pet Strollers
Costway Petsite 3 in 1 Pet Stroller
The PetSite 3-in-1 is multifunctional, easy to assemble and fold, lightweight, and sturdy. It’s also really versatile for travel. It serves as both a car seat and portable carrier, complete with a carrying strap. It has a maximum capacity of 33 pounds, so you could potentially fit two small animals, and the mesh top makes it easy to keep an eye on them. Our evaluator reported that it was easy to assemble, and the stroller moved easily, even on bumpier surfaces.
It’s $30 less than it was a few weeks ago, marking the lowest price we’ve ever seen. And with the weather cooling off in many areas, there’s no better time to take your less mobile pup (or, if you’re like me, your cat) for fresh air and sightseeing.
Pet Hair Remover Tools
ChomChom Roller Pet Hair Removal
If you can have only one pet hair removal tool in your cleaning toolbox, this is the one. The ChomChom is the only tool our testers evaluated that gathers and picks up all of the pet hair it touches. After just three forward and backward swipes, our velvet and linen-polyester pillows were left almost completely free of hair. It was the best tool on carpet, too, and no other tool we tested left it as hair-free as the ChomChom. An evaluator who has carpal tunnel syndrome noted that this tool required significantly less pressure to use, which meant that her condition wasn’t aggravated as it was with a few of the other pet hair removers. It’s also worth noting that three of our at-home evaluators liked this tool so much that they bought it for themselves post-evaluation.
Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover
The Analan Mini Pet Hair Remover is a triangle-shaped device that has three unique ridged sides, and it did very well in our evaluations. The rubber material created a static attraction with our velvet pillow so that it was able to pick up all of the cat hair we applied to the surface. But this was the only surface where it picked up hair. On the polyester-linen blend pillow, it bunched up the hair in easier-to-pick-up piles. Ditto for the carpet, where it did a great job of gathering up the hair in neat piles, but we did notice some redepositing of hair on subsequent swipes as it became stuck on the ridges. The hole in the center of the triangle allows for a comfortable grip. Because the ridged surfaces are so small, cleaning a large area, like a whole upholstered couch, takes a significant amount of time.
Dog and Cat Toys
GioCiv Store Interactive Cat Toy, Hide and Seek Mouse Catching Game
Looking for an interactive toy to entertain and distract your cat that doesn’t require your full attention? This could be just the thing you’ve been searching for. Here’s how it works: Insert the small rolling, tweeting, light-up ball into the mat, then sit back and watch as your cat attempts to hunt down the ball.
Yeowww! Catnip Banana, 3-pack
Shopping editor Mary Beth Quirk recommends this cheeky toy that’s bound to please. “It can keep my cat happy and playing for a long time,” she says, “and I can tell she loves it—to the point that her love of chewing on it has required me to get a regular banana subscription to keep her supplied. Plus, she’s just super-cute when she grabs it in her paws and bunny-kicks it to death.”
Cameras
Furbo Pet Camera
In evaluating the best pet cameras, the Furbo dog camera was our editors’ top choice, thanks to its aesthetically pleasing design and camera with a wide viewing angle. The ability to choose a voice prompt for the treat toss is a bonus. The device’s basic app features include live view, toss treats, talk to and hear your pet, and get barking alerts. The Nanny cam subscription includes cloud recording, advanced barking alert, Doggie Diary (a video summary of the day that you can choose to save to your device), activity alert, selfie alert, and person alert. And yes, you can still use the Furbo if you have a cat.
The compact, battery-powered TP-Link Tapo MagCam C425 performs well in our tests and offers local storage via microSD card (up to 512 gigabytes; sold separately). The “bullet-style” camera features person detection, pet detection, vehicle detection, monitoring zones, color night vision (even when the built-in spotlights are off), a built-in siren, and voice and app control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home/Assistant. Best of all, you don’t need to sign up for a subscription to use any of these features. TP-Link also sells a $40 solar panel that can be connected to the camera to keep the battery charged. Note that you need to apply the on-page coupon to get the full 50 percent discount.
The Floodlight Cam E340 is one of Eufy’s dual-camera models. It has a 3K wide-angle camera and a 2K telephoto camera that work together to give you up to 8x zoom. It’s also one of the few motorized pan-and-tilt floodlight cameras available today, allowing you to easily check the camera’s surroundings. In our tests, it receives top scores for video quality and response time. The laundry list of features includes local video storage with up to a 128-gigabyte microSD card (sold separately), monitoring zones, person detection, pet detection, vehicle detection, motion tracking to follow subjects as they move around your home, color night vision using the built-in 2,000-lumen floodlights, 24/7 video recording (not just recording when motion is detected), a built-in siren, voice and app control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home/Assistant, and support for WiFi 6 wireless routers.
Pet Water Fountains
Veken Pet Water Fountain
This is a great, budget-friendly option if you’re not sure your pets will adapt from a bowl to a fountain. You can try it out without investing too much (and you can always invest more in an upgrade later on if you want). The Veken water fountain, consisting of five parts, was intuitive for our tester to assemble, and the carbon and foam filter replacements are low cost as well at $10 for a four-pack or $24 for 16. It was the noisiest option, but that didn’t deter the tester’s pets. And the flower can be removed for a low-profile bubbler effect rather than a raised fountain.
Petlibro Pet Water Fountain
The Petlibro Dockstream Smart Pet Fountain is a WiFi-enabled device that lets you accurately monitor your pet’s water intake. It comes with app-controlled features and remote scheduling, too. In testing, we found the app’s features surprisingly insightful, especially if you need to track your pet’s hydration habits.
Wonder Creature Store Cat Water Fountain (Stainless Steel)
“I have two of these, and they’re great because they encourage the cats to drink more water,” says Amanda Arnold, senior manager of business analytics at CR. “Cats notoriously don’t usually drink enough water, so having these helps keep their water cleaner and the kitties healthier!” The fountain comes with a filter inside and is dishwasher-safe.
Pet Feeders
Petlibro One RFID Smart Feeder
The Petlibro One RFID Smart Feeder was the fanciest automatic feeder we evaluated (it came with great advanced features like a customizable LED screen), and it was on point with food measurements and schedules. But adult or small-dog-sized kibble got clogged in its chute.
Petlibro Granary Smart Feeder
The PetLibro automatic pet feeder was easy to use and has an app that makes setting schedules and dispensing food a breeze. It dispenses accurate amounts of dry food for dogs or cats and has a voice recording feature that allows you to call your pet for meals.
Vacuums for Pet Hair
With a built-in hose, the compact, cord-free Black+Decker Flex makes it easy to suction up debris in hard-to-reach places, like under a car seat or behind your washer. It earns a stellar rating for cleaning edges and tight spaces. It also comes with a rubber pet-hair attachment that helps remove more hair because it doesn’t stick to the rubber and goes directly into the suction tube. The dustbin is slightly difficult to remove, and you might have to reach inside it to eject all the gunk when emptying this model over a trash can.
The Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog is on the pricey side, but it’s one of the best canisters you can buy. It’s a top-grade performer in our bare floor and pet hair tests, but not as great when it comes to cleaning carpet. The vacuum also performs well in our emissions tests: It doesn’t release debris back into the air of the room you just cleaned. Miele vacuums have a devoted following, and in our member surveys the brand earns top scores for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.
Consistent with its moniker, the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser erased any evidence of pet hair from test carpets. It wasn’t the most powerful vacuum, but testers like the lighted crevice tool and the lights on the side of the vacuum that make it easier to see debris along edges. This model also has a lift-off feature which allows the user to convert the vacuum to canister mode.
Dog Shoes
Qumy Dog Shoes
With their fabric exterior and interior, rubber sole with grips, and double adjustable fabric fasteners with reflective strips, the QUMY Dog Shoes resemble traditional sneakers. But the QUMY proved slightly difficult to get on and off (they have a narrow opening) and they sat a little low on our dogs’ legs.
Litter Boxes
WoofiGo Stainless Steel Cat Litter Box
Stainless steel litter boxes have grown popular recently, thanks largely to the nonstick material that is much easier to clean than other traditional litter boxes. I personally own a stainless box for my cats, and it really is a simpler process to get everything disinfected when I change out the litter. And our evaluator had a similar experience, saying it only took a few swipes with soap and water and a generous rinsing to get it shining like new again. The one thing I will say is the sound of your cats digging around is much different (and much louder) when they’re scratching metal versus plastic.
Litter-Robot 3 Automatic Litterbox
For those looking to splurge (or take a breather from scooping up litter), this automatic, self-cleaning litter box can be a saving grace. “I have this, and would have loved it if someone had bought it as a gift since it’s quite pricey,” Amanda Arnold, senior manager of business analytics at CR, says. “I’ve had it for about three years now, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever purchased, like ever!” You can also buy a bundle on Amazon that includes accessories like a mat, a ramp, and a fence to help contain litter.
Litter
Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Slide Platinum Clumping Litter
There are many reasons to like this cat litter from Arm & Hammer. In our tests, it masked the smell of onion immediately upon contact and maintained a pleasant, clean scent for 24 hours. On its own, the litter’s scent wasn’t overpowering and reminded our tester of one that lingers on freshly laundered sheets. The clumps from liquid messes stayed together when shaking the scooper, and the litter formed the most uniform layer around solid waste.
Fresh Step Extreme Clumping Litter with Febreze, 2 pack
This was one of the dustiest litters we tested. However, it was a champ at masking smells. It also clumped easily and could be transferred from the litter box to the trash without falling all over the floor. Its Febreze scent wasn’t overpowering, either.
Pee Pads
Earth Rated Max Absorbency Pee Pads
Earth Rated Max Absorbency Pee Pads were a top performer in water absorption, but they were not our top pick because they cost significantly more per pad and per 100 square inches than the other pee pads we tested. But if these are within your budget, you’ll probably love the four adhesive tabs on the back as much as our tester did. Because of this, they stay put, and they also hold up well in shredding tests.
And if you choose to autoship with Chewy, the discount brings that price down to $24 for the first order.
Dog Nail Clippers and Grinders
Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer
The Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer is basic and inexpensive, but it gets the job done. The clippers have a guard along the back to prevent you from clipping more than you intend to, which could cause your dogs’ paws to bleed. Because they’re manual, they’re quiet. (This is ideal for skittish dogs.) And they almost always cut the entire nail within one go, making for an efficient process. The only downside is that these clippers aren’t high-powered. If your dog has long, unmaintained nails, you may need to use a grinder first to get them down to baseline, then use the Gonicc for maintenance every few weeks.
Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder
The Casfuy Dog Nail Grinder is a two-speed grinder with three grinding ports that are designed to suit the size of your dog’s nails. Because it was less powerful than the Dremel, it took longer to get a nail down to the same length. However, it was also quieter, which made it a better choice for the more anxious dog in our evaluations. It does lack a safety guard, but because it operates more slowly, it’s easier to watch your progress and stop before you reach the quick.
