Designing the perfect sleep environment is always easier when you’re shopping at a discount. For Amaozn’s Prime Big Deal Days event, which ends today, the retailer has cut prices on plenty of items, including a decent selection of sleep essentials, like mattresses, pillows, and sheets.
But it’s not just the basics that are marked down. We also found deals on nice-to-haves, like a sunrise alarm clock to ensure you wake on time, and air purifiers to help create a sleep space with fewer allergens. And we’ve got you covered if you’re looking to make your bed cozier, say with a dreamy duvet or plush mattress topper.
Consumer Reports has tested all of the products in this roundup and keeps tabs on their prices so that we can help you find the best options and the best prices. Bear in mind that not all the deals for Prime Big Deal Days are good—we’ve seen plenty of prices that are the same, or even higher, than at other times of the year. We’ve also seen steep discounts on products that just don’t perform. Here, we’ve culled the list to highlight real deals on the sleep essentials that are actually worth buying. We’re also including sales at Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.
If you’re a CR member, you can also take advantage of some exclusive mattress and bedding deals on brands like Avocado, Casper, and Tuft & Needle. You’ll need to be logged in to see the details.
Air Purifiers
The portable Blue Pure 211i Max does a terrific job removing dust, pollen, and smoke on its higher setting, but expect a bit of noise. Try it on low, and you’ll have more quiet while still experiencing top-notch results. This model is designed for use in a large space of 350 to 650 square feet and costs about $109 a year to maintain. It also weighs just 17 pounds, making it easy to move around.
The kid sister to the 211i Max, Blueair’s 411i Max has a similar design, but for a smaller space—CR recommends a medium room or less. The portable air purifier delivers impressive results on its higher speed, and as with many air purifiers, it’s less effective on the lower speed. A true selling point is its relatively low annual operating cost and the fact that CR members are highly satisfied with their Blueairs. If you’re looking for an even cheaper option for a smaller room, the Pure 511 is another three-speed model that performs reasonably well in our tests. Amazon has it on sale for $20 off.
The HoMedics AP-T200 has impressive performance and an attractive design, similar to the AP-C500 which is also on sale. The major difference is that this model is designed for medium rooms of 150-350 square feet, so it’s smaller in size and has a smaller price tag.
Cooling Blankets
Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket
The Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket was CR’s top pick because it kept us the coolest in our tests and was comfortable, soft, and well-made. It features smooth Arc-Chill 3.0 Cool Fabric on one side and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified cotton on the other side.
Duvets
Utopia Bedding Comforter Duvet Insert
The Utopia Bedding duvet insert is perfect if you don’t want to spend a ton of a new comforter. I personally have one that I’ve been using for the last three years and I find it to be lightweight and perfect for warmer nights. And with a duvet cover, it gets cozy and warm. CR’s reviewer pointed out that it’s not as fluffy as other duvets (it is on the thinner side). The material is synthetic, so it doesn’t allow for airflow those made with natural fibers like cotton can provide.
Buffy Cloud Comforter
Buffy’s Cloud Comforter garnered the Editor’s Pick for being the softest choice in our at-home assessment. Thanks to its smooth, silky feel and fluffiness, the duvet is comfortable enough to use without a duvet cover. Made of recycled materials, it’s uniformly stuffed in layers, to prevent clumping and shedding. The shell material is 100% sateen-weave Tencel lyocell.
Ear Plugs
Lysian Soft Foam Earplugs
The Lysian Soft Foam Earplugs were the least polarizing for evaluators; people with larger and smaller canals experienced good sound dampening using them, and the hot pink color made them easy to find in the dark.
Mattresses
This moderately priced foam mattress-in-a-box impressively supports petite to large and tall back and side sleepers, resists bounciness, and is resilient enough to allow sleepers to change position easily. Its 2-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam is claimed to keep sleepers cool. The mattress is firm for sure, scoring 7 out of 10 in CR’s firmness tests, and the durability is top-notch.
If you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Casper Dream is a solid pick, providing pressure relief and comfort to those who need it. In our lab evaluation, we found the model—a newbie to CR’s ratings—to be a standout for petite back sleepers, and it serves all other sizes and positions very well. The Dream scores well for durability, too, so you can expect to get sound sleep on it for 8 to 10 years. If you sleep with a partner, you should feel very little vibration from their movement. CR members give Casper mattresses high marks for comfort and owner satisfaction.
This mattress-in-a-box has very few weak spots. The innersprings topped with foam deliver very good support to all types and sizes of sleepers, from petites to large and tall. The durability is top-notch, with little in the way of sagging, softening, or damage in eight years of simulated use.
This hybrid mattress is a great value, offering terrific support for petite and average back and side sleepers of all sizes. It lets you change sleep positions without transmitting movement throughout the bed. The only sleepers it’s not ideal for are those who exceed 6-foot-2 in height, 220 pounds in weight, and primarily slumber on their sides.
Mattress Toppers
A solid value pick, this 3-inch topper from BedStory offers a luxe feel, thanks, in part, to its removable quilted cover. Lab tests found that its two-layer gel-infused-foam design registers warmer, and an evaluator noted that it offers a resilient surface with a medium- to medium-soft feel. Highlights include an inner encasement as well as a machine-washable cover that zips down halfway.
The dual-layer Casper Comfy adds a layer of softer foam to a firmer foam base. At only 20 pounds, the mattress topper is fairly easy to move around and the machine-washable zip-off cover (made of polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex) makes it a cinch to clean. But the topper can’t be flipped.
This Tuft & Needle mattress topper earned top-notch scores for both support and convenience in our lab tests. The flippable topper consists of a two-inch-thick slice of adaptive foam, wrapped in a removable polyester cover. This model doesn’t have corner straps, though, so it might shift a bit on your mattress. The Tuft & Needle topper comes with a 3-year limited warranty, and there’s a 30-day return policy.
Tempur-Pedic’s 3-inch memory foam cushion allows you to add Tempur’s unique, slow-sink design to any mattress. There’s a much firmer initial feel that slowly softens to a medium and contours to the body over the course of 30 seconds. Our lab test found that the topper doesn’t trap a lot of heat. The Tempur Supreme comes with a removable polyester cover and can be flipped over after removing and replacing its cover.
Pillows
The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow is made of shredded memory foam and excels in our tests for support, no matter your size or sleep position. The Coop also keeps its shape well, showing little to no change in height or fluffiness in our resilience tests. Each pillow comes with extra foam, so you can adjust the filling to your liking. The only area where this pillow falls a bit short is in breathability—it sleeps slightly warm.
The Beckham Luxury Linens Hotel Collection Pillow has a 100-percent-cotton cover and a 100-percent-polyester gel-fiber filling. The pillow aced our test for breathability, so it should help keep you from feeling hot; it also scored top marks for resiliency, so it should maintain its shape over time.
Made of two layers of gel memory foam, Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow is top-notch for side-sleeper support but only middling for back-sleeper support. In our resilience test, this pillow successfully maintained its shape. Despite having “breeze” in its name, the pillow doesn’t allow for much airflow, so you may get sweaty sleeping on it. Only the cover is machine-washable.
Sheets
Brushed microfiber isn’t as breathable as cotton, but if you’re ok with that, this Mellanni sheet set is a top-notch pick. It offers a softer feel than most cotton options and is pretty resistant to wrinkling. The one area where it slightly misses the mark is in our fit test. Though the packaging claims “deep pockets,” the set is best suited for mattresses with a depth of 10 inches or less.
Prices will vary depending on size and color.
There’s a reason Brooklinen is an internet sensation. Our tests find that its Luxe Core sheets have an excellent fit on mattress depths of 14 inches or less. And when it comes to shrinkage, consumers can rest assured that they won’t experience much of it. What’s even better, Luxe Core sheets are the softest cotton sheets in our ratings, according to our sensory test, and at a cost of under $200, they fall in the middle of the pack for pricing. When you’re making the bed, these sheets take out the guesswork. There are labels along each side that read “short side” and “long side” so that you’re never confused.
Sleep Masks
Mzoo Sleep Mask
Even small sources of light can affect sleep quality, and finding ways to block out that light may significantly improve your ability to get a better night’s rest. This unassuming mask is optimal at blocking light effectively for a variety of head shapes. It feels comfortable on the face and is easy to adjust.
Sunrise Alarm Clocks
Jall Sunrise Alarm Clock
The Jall Wake Up Light Sunrise Alarm Clock came out on top in our evaluations from an ease-of-use standpoint. It has two independent alarms (so you can set them for different times depending on your routine), seven alarm tones (including “wind bells” and birds chirping), an FM radio, and a fall-asleep mode that simulates a sunset (though no white noise option). It was relatively easy to set up and use. According to the manufacturer, it emits a maximum light intensity of 240 lux. Tapping the snooze button will temporarily shut off both the light and the sound. (The advantage: You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark. The disadvantage? You’re more likely to fall back asleep in the dark.)
Loftie Alarm Clock
A modern take on a retro concept, the Loftie alarm clock is as aesthetically pleasing as it is chockful of tranquilizing sounds. It doubles as a white noise machine and as a sunrise alarm clock. While it can be a bit finicky to set up, it’s easy to operate once you’re familiar with the buttons and settings. Bonus: It looks great on a nightstand and its light levels can be adjusted to match any mood.
White Noise Machines
Magicteam Sound Machines White Noise Machine
This small plug-and-play sound machine from Magicteam is sized just right—like a deck of cards if cards were square. And it’s back down to the best price we’ve seen. It delivers good sound quality and variety, packing in 20 sounds, including nature sounds and even a freight train. The controls, just five buttons, are intuitive to use, although one evaluator said they were quite small and a bit difficult to see in low light. And it has a timer in case you don’t want it playing all night.
