Peloton Recalled the Tread+ in 2021. It Just Announced a Fix.
The repair, which comes after hundreds of reported incidents and dozens of injuries, is designed to prevent people from being pulled under the machine.
Just over two years after Peloton’s Tread+ treadmill was recalled, Peloton and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced a fix for the machine.
The Tread+ (which was first called the “Tread,” until Peloton in 2021 announced a smaller model and dubbed the larger version the Tread+) was recalled on May 5, 2021, for posing what CR’s experts and CPSC officials described then as a unique hazard to users. The machine, which had been on the market since 2018, was linked to incidents in which people, pets, or objects were pulled and trapped under the rear of the treadmill.
These incidents—a total of 351 have been reported to date—have resulted in the death of one child as well as 90 injuries, including broken bones, lacerations, abrasions, and friction burns.

Earlier this year, Peloton Interactive agreed to pay a $19,065,000 fine to settle charges that the company had failed to report to the CPSC that the Tread+ was defective and posed an unreasonable risk of serious injury. The fine exceeded the $17.15 million current maximum amount permitted for a series of related violations, in part because of the company’s conduct after the recall, knowingly distributing 38 Tread+ treadmills using third-party delivery firms and Peloton personnel.
