    Pros

    • Lightweight seat
    • Harness stores within seat for booster use
    • LATCH use allowed up to 50 lbs.
    • Installation with LATCH is excellent

    Cons

    • Top tether retention for children weighing more than 40 lbs.
    • Belt fit in booster mode not ideal
    • Cover removal requires complete removal of the harness system

    CR's Take

The Cosco Finale 2-in-1 is a lightweight seat that allows for LATCH use up to 50 lbs. It's difficult to achieve proper belt fit in booster mode. Due to our crash test results, CR does not recommend use in harness mode for children weighing greater than 40 lbs.

    Detailed Test Results

Consumer Reports’ car seat crash test, developed in 2014, provides comparative performance information on which car seats could provide an additional margin of safety.  All child seats sold in the United States are required to meet government safety standards, and Consumer Reports’ tests are not designed to test compliance with those standards.  Rather, we evaluate the seats’ performance under conditions designed by our experts to simulate certain crash scenarios, and rate them on a scale ranging from “basic” to “best.”  The test conditions have been carefully designed to simulate the interior environment and forces encountered during a crash in contemporary vehicles. About

The Cosco Finale 2-In-1 is part of the Car Seats test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Harnessed Car Seats models like the Finale 2-In-1 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Ease of use: Our judgment of how easy each seat is to use including the clarity of labels and instructions, adjustments of clips and buckles, the transition of the seat between modes and installation features such as LATCH connections, belt paths, top tethers and booster guides.

Forward facing fit-to-vehicle: A rating of how compatible, easy and secure a child car seat can be correctly installed in the forward-facing direction. This rating is a combination of the LATCH system and belt ratings that are available individually on the model page.

Rear facing fit-to-vehicle: A rating of how compatible, easy and secure a child car seat can be correctly installed in the rear-facing direction. This rating is a combination of LATCH system and belt ratings that are available individually on the model page.

    Additional Information

In Consumer Reports’ crash tests, 1 of 2 Cosco Finale 2-in-1 seats tested forward-facing with a 62 lb. dummy, representing a heavier 6 year old child, and 2 of 2 Finale seats tests forward-facing with a 52 lb. dummy, representing an average 6 year old child, the structure that anchors the seat’s top tether broke in our tests, enabling the top tether strap to extend. This allowed the seat and dummy to move farther forward than in tests where the top tether anchorage remains intact, and it resulted in pieces of sharp plastic in areas that may contact the child. This could provide a lesser margin of safety when compared to other models subjected to the same test protocol. As required of all car seats sold in the U.S., the Cosco Finale 2-in-1 must comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and the manufacturers self-certify to such compliance. The federal standard is designed to ensure an essential level of crash protection. CR’s crash evaluation of car seats is based on how each seat’s performance compares with that of similar models in our 35 mph frontal crash tests. Given the results for the Cosco Finale 2-in-1, we believe there are better choices that could provide a greater margin of safety in certain crash conditions similar to those simulated in our tests.
