2017 Ram 1500 truck recalled for tailgate risk

Ram is recalling 1.1 million pickup trucks from the 2015 through 2017 model years because their tailgates can open unexpectedly, potentially letting cargo fall out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The agency's concern is that cargo tumbling out the back of the truck could lead to an accident.

Affected vehicles include Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks with 5-foot-6-inch or 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates. Trucks with 8-foot beds and trucks without power locking tailgates are not included in the recall, NHTSA said.

The automaker said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this problem.

The Details

Vehicles recalled:

Ram 1500 light-duty pickup trucks with 5-foot-6-inch or 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren, Mich., plant from Oct. 8, 2014, through Dec. 15, 2017, or at Ram’s Saltillo, Mexico, plant from July 31, 2014, through July 31, 2017.
Ram 2500 heavy-duty pickup trucks with 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren plant from Aug. 25, 2014, through Aug. 2, 2017.
Ram 3500 heavy-duty pickup trucks with 6-foot-4-inch beds and power locking tailgates built at Ram’s Warren plant from May 30, 2014, through Aug. 2, 2017.

The problem: According to NHTSA, a tab inside the tailgate’s power lock assembly may fracture. The agency says this may potentially result in the tailgate “inadvertently falling open at any time.”

The fix: Although Ram has not offered details on the repair, the company says it will fix all affected vehicles free of charge to owners.

How to contact the manufacturer: The recall is expected to begin Sept. 14, 2018. Owners may contact customer service for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the parent company of Ram trucks, at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 18V-486. The FCA number for this recall is U74.
