What's behind our bike helmet Ratings?

We look for:
  • Overall score
Judged primarily on the basis of impact absorption, retention system strength, ventilation, ease of use, resistance to roll-off and also weight and features.
  • Impact absorption
How well a helmet can absorb impact forces, thus reducing the deceleration experienced by a head, during an impact. Based on helmet performance in laboratory impact tests at various impact speeds and impact surfaces under several conditions.
  • Ventilation
Our evaluation of how well air flows through the helmet to provide cooling while riding.
  • Fit adjustments
How versatile the helmet retention system adjustments are with regard to the ability to accommodate various head sizes and shapes. Based on expert judgements.
  • Ease of use
How easy the various buckles and adjustments of the helmet are to use. Based on sensory panelist judgments.
  • Weight
All other things being equal, a helmet that weighs less causes less fatigue. Score is based on weight relative to other tested helmets.
