CR's Take

The Britax UpNGo backless booster seat is a lightweight booster that can be used with kids who weigh at least 40 lb. and up to 120 lb. Our expert testers found that the  Britax UpNGo is fairly straightforward and easy to use. It includes optional lower anchors for securing the seat when not in use, and comes with a shoulder belt guide for better belt positioning. In CR’s tests, we found that the Britax UpNGo had some issues with proper lap belt placement in some vehicles. You’ll want to read the manual to make sure you’ve routed the belt properly and that it’s fitting your child well. While Britax doesn't specify a minimum age requirement for using the UpNGo, CR's car seat safety experts recommend switching to a booster seat only once your child outgrows their forward-facing harnessed car seat and is at least 4 years old.

This seat may be a good choice for:

  • Families looking to switch from a harnessed car seat to a booster seat
  • Families looking for a booster seat with lower anchors
  • Families looking for a lightweight booster seat to travel with or move between vehicles

Detailed Test Results

Ease of use: The Britax UpNGo is fairly easy to use, with color-coded belt paths, but it’s still important to read the manual to ensure proper seat belt routing, which can affect the booster’s stability.

Booster fit: The Britax UpNGo comes with a belt clip to help guide the shoulder belt position, which we found to be necessary for use in some vehicles. We also had difficulty getting a proper lap belt position in some vehicles.

About

The Britax UpNGo is part of the Car Seats test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Booster Seat models like the UpNGo are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Additionally, it includes an assessment of the booster's compatibility with vehicle seats and interior components.

Booster fit (no-back): A rating that reflects a booster seat's ability to correctly position the lap and shoulder belts in various test vehicles using a child-sized dummy, when used as a backless booster. Additionally, it includes an assessment of the booster's compatibility with vehicle seats and interior components.

Ease of use: Our evaluation of how easy each seat is to use, including items such as the clarity of labels and instructions, the ease of achieving an appropriate belt fit, and the transition between highback and backless modes where applicable.
