    Pros

    • Excellent crash protection in CR’s rigorous crash testing
    • LATCH installation is easy and secure with push-on, “SuperCinch” LATCH connectors
    • Includes a seat belt lock-off feature (“LeverLock”) to help easily increase seat belt tension when forward-facing
    • Harness can be adjusted without rethreading
    • Harness stores easily within seat for booster use
    • Has a recline level bubble indicator
    • Seat covers can be removed for machine-washing
    • Uses flame-retardant chemical-free fabrics

    Cons

    • Seat is heavy and bulky
    • The most reclined position may have too much of a recline for optimal crash safety
    • LATCH use is limited to 35 lbs in rear-facing mode
    • Adjusting the crotch strap requires removing the seat pads, cupholders, and buckle cover, which is tedious
    • Cover removal instructions are not included in the manual, which means you’ll have to look it up online

    CR's Take

The Chicco OneFit LX is an all-in-one car seat for children 5 to 100 pounds that transitions from harnessed mode to booster mode as your child grows. In CR’s tests, the Chicco OneFit LX provides excellent crash protection and secure installation in both rear-facing and forward-facing positions and with either LATCH or seat belt installations. Adjusting the harness is simple, but adjusting the crotch strap means you’ll need to first remove the seat pads, cup holders, and buckle cover, which is not as ideal.

CR’s testers note that the seat is bulky and fairly heavy at 26 pounds. The seat’s weight has some drawbacks beyond making it harder to move the seat between cars, too: because the seat is on the heavier side, your child will only be able to use the seat inLATCH install mode up to 35 pounds in the rear-facing position, since the LATCH system has a weight limit that includes the weight of the car seat and the child rider.

This seat may be a good choice for:

    • Families who want to purchase an all-in-one car seat (as opposed to using an infant seat for the first year and then switching to a convertible seat
    • Families who don’t need to move their car seat between multiple cars
    • Anyone who needs a simple and straightforward installation, thanks to the push-on LATCH connectors and seat belt lockoff

    Detailed Test Results

Ease of use: Overall, the Chicco OneFit LX all-in-one car seat was very easy to use, with a simple and streamlined installation process, easily adjustable harness and headrest, easy open-close buckle, and push-on LATCH connectors.

Fit-to-vehicle LATCH: Installation was simple and secure, and the fit is excellent, though you may need to remove the backseat head restraint in some vehicles when installing in forward-facing mode.

Fit-to-vehicle belt: This car seat offers an excellent and secure fit when installing with the seat belt, though you may need to remove the backseat head restraint when installing in forward-facing position.

Booster fit: The OneFit does a very good job at positioning both the lap and shoulder belt correctly for booster aged children. Its wide base may be wobbly in some center seats and may need to be moved sideways to access the belts in others. Vehicle seatbacks with significant bolstering may have compatibility issues as the fixed side-impact bolsters may interfere.

Crash protection: In CR’s crash test protocol, this seat performed well and did not exhibit significant structural integrity issues.

    Additional Information

Good to know: All child car seats sold in the United States are required to meet government safety standards.

About our testing: Consumer Reports’ child car seat tests are not designed to test compliance with federal standards. Rather, we evaluate car seat performance under conditions designed by our experts that go beyond the required federal safety standards. Consumer Reports’ independent car seat crash test program has been carefully designed to simulate the forces encountered during a crash, while replicating some of the real-world factors that might impact a car seat’s performance. Our testing aims to determine which car seats could provide an extra level of safety when compared to other models in the same category.

Basic, Better, or Best: CR rates the child car seats we crash test on a scale of Basic, Better, and Best, based on the additional margin of safety they may provide. Read about how we test car seats to learn more about our crash test protocol.
