Pros

  • Very good belt fit in highback and backless modes
  • Ease-of-use
  • Can be secured via LATCH

Cons

  • Heavy and wide seat
  • Difficult to adjust headrest with booster in the vehicle or kid in seat
  • Use of lap-belt positioner requires belt to be rethreaded with every use
  • Label placement for belt routing is difficult to see when booster is installed in vehicle
  • No minimum age requirement, which may prompt premature use for young kids
  • Replacing headrest cover is tedious and difficult even with fabric key

CR's Take

The Uppababy Alta provides a lap-belt positioner that requires rethreading with every use but doesn’t pull the lap belt too far forward onto the child’s thighs. It’s difficult to engage the headrest adjustment handle while the booster is in the vehicle or with a kid’s weight in the seat. The Alta’s cover replacement is very difficult and requires a tool.

About

The UPPAbaby Alta is part of the Car Seats test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Booster Seat models like the Alta are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Crash protection/Belt fit highback: A rating that combines the potential for highback boosters to limit injury and movement in a crash based on simulated frontal crash tests and the potential for the seat to provide a good belt fit in various vehicles using child sized dummies.

Crash protection/Belt fit backless: A rating that combines the potential for backless boosters to limit injury and movement in a crash based on simulated frontal crash tests and the potential for the seat to provide a good belt fit in various vehicles using child sized dummies.

Booster fit (with back): A rating that reflects a booster seat's ability to correctly position the lap and shoulder belts in various test vehicles using a child-sized dummy, when used as a highback booster. Additionally, it includes an assessment of the booster's compatibility with vehicle seats and interior components.
