You won’t need a high chair right away—for at least the first few months, your baby will snuggle up next to you or another caregiver to nurse or for bottle feedings. You’ll feel like you have plenty of time to research different options and pick the best high chair . . . and then one day, seemingly out of the blue, you’ll realize your baby is sitting up and ready for solids.

Starting around 6 months or so, your baby’s high chair will become a regular go-to for snack and meal times. Depending on the model, it can even be used through their toddler years. This means that whichever high chair you choose, it will most likely get a lot of (heavy, messy) use during your child’s first years.

When choosing the best high chair for your family, there are several factors you’ll want to consider, says Joan Muratore, test program leader for babies and healthy living here at Consumer Reports.

Does it fit your budget? This is the most important factor for many parents. “High chairs in our ratings range from $30 up to $600 or more, with an average of about $220,” says Muratore.

Does it fit your space? Consider how much space you have in your kitchen, dining area, or any room where you’ll be using your high chair. “You may not want, or have space for, a large, bulky high chair,” says Muratore.

    • Will it grow with your child? “Consider whether you want a chair that can continue to be used as your child grows—as a booster, a toddler chair, or even an adult chair. Or do you want just a basic high chair and you’ll buy a booster when you need it?” Muratore says.

Is it easy to clean? “The busier the design of a high chair, the more difficult it tends to be to clean,” says Muratore. “If there’s a seat pad, make sure it’s machine-washable, as food and other messes are virtually guaranteed to get on the pad.” And don’t overlook the tray. “Look for a chair that has a tray insert that covers the entire tray below and can be put into the dishwasher for cleanup,” she says.

Consumer Reports tested more than 20 popular high chair models, from Bugaboo to Uppababy, assessing them for ease of use, ease of cleaning, and safety, to find the best high chairs. The three high chairs that impressed our testers the most are our top picks for high chairs for 2025.

CR’s top pick for high chairs, below, is the highest-rated widely available model from our rigorous lab tests. Our testers also chose a value pick for high chairs that offers a great test score for a good price. And because not every family’s needs are the same, our expert pick for high chairs is specially designed to grow with your child from infancy through the big kid years and beyond.

Top Pick for High Chairs: Uppababy Ciro

The Uppababy Ciro high chair won top scores for safety and ease of cleaning. And it doesn’t look bad or take up a lot of space, either. A few of the features that stood out to our testers:

    • 3-position adjustable tray that’s dishwasher-safe and was “easy to attach and adjust,” says Muratore. The tray also fits perfectly over a dining table if you want to sit your baby with the rest of the family.

    • 2-position adjustable footrest to grow with your baby

    • Machine-washable harness straps that can be adjusted with the push of a button

    • Convenient hook storage for bibs on the back of the chair

But keep in mind that while the footrest is adjustable, the seat height is not. The backrest doesn’t recline, and the chair can’t be folded up to be put away. We also found the harness buckle to be tight and difficult to release. The seat surface is wipe-clean only, and if you want it to be cushioned, you’ll need to buy the seat pad separately. But “despite these limitations, the chair offers a sleek design with practical features for everyday use,” says Muratore.

Our testers’ value pick in high chairs for 2025, as well as our expert pick, are both made by the same brand and offer excellent functionality through multiple stages. Depending on your family’s needs and budget, one of these high chairs might be right for you.
