It’s no secret that you’ll need a lot of baby gear during the first few years of your child’s life, including a car seat. But if the thought of purchasing an infant car seat for your baby, followed by a convertible car seat and eventually a belt-positioning booster sounds expensive (and like it might involve an exhausting amount of research), an all-in-one car seat may be worth considering.
As the name implies, these seats represent an all-in-one solution for the car seat years. “All-in-one car seats offer a little more versatility and longevity,” says Emily A. Thomas, PhD, associate director of auto safety at Consumer Reports. Like convertible car seats, all-in-ones can be positioned either rear- or forward-facing as your child grows. And when your child reaches the booster stage, “you already have a booster seat built in for when it’s time to make that transition,” Thomas says.
All-in-one car seats can also be a smart cost-saving choice. “You’re only purchasing one seat from birth to booster instead of two or three,” says Michael Bloch, who leads Consumer Reports’ testing of child seats.
When shopping for an all-in-one car seat, there are some key questions you’ll want to keep in mind.
- How you’ll use it: Many parents choose an infant car seat for the first year of their child’s life because these seats can often be used as part of a travel system, offering portability and convenience. All-in-one car seats, by contrast, are weightier and bulkier and don’t come with a detachable carrier, so you can’t move them from car to stroller frame. If you already use an infant car seat in another vehicle or don’t think you’d need this extra portability, an all-in-one car seat may be right for you from day one. All-in-one car seats “are a great option for a second car, or to keep with grandparents,” Bloch says. They can also serve as a great second seat after your child outgrows their infant seat.
- How big your car is: Take note of the dimensions of any all-in-one car seats you’re considering. Because they do tend to be bigger and bulkier than infant or convertible models, all-in-one seats might not be the best choice for smaller cars or families who need to use every seating position in the back seat.
- How easy the seat is to clean: Kids are messy, and owning just one car seat from the newborn days through the school-aged years can mean a lot of accumulated spit-up, blowouts, spills, and crumbs. All-in-one seats require a bit more cleaning and care over time.

Consumer Reports tested 16 all-in-one car seats, from Graco to Joie, evaluating them for ease of use, crash protection, and vehicle fit. The three all-in-one car seats that impress our testers the most are our Top Picks for all-in-one car seats for 2026.
CR’s Top Pick for all-in-one car seats, below, is the highest-rated widely available model from our rigorous lab tests. We’ve also designated a value pick; it offers a great score for a good price. And because not every family’s needs are the same, our expert pick is a parent-friendly option that’s incredibly easy to use.
Top Pick for All-in-One Car Seats: Chicco OneFit LX

Our top-rated all-in-one car seat, the Chicco OneFit LX, can accommodate children from 5 to 100 pounds, transitioning from harnessed mode to booster mode as your child grows. “This seat does it all, and does it all well,” says Jessica D’Argenio Waller, a reporter for baby content at CR who’s also a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. The OneFit LX has excellent crash protection ratings and offers secure installation in both rear- and forward-facing positions with either LATCH or seat belt installations. “It has excellent forward-facing fit and very good booster positioning,” Waller adds.
Other features our testers appreciate include:
- Removable, machine-washable car seat covers.
- Seat belt tensioning feature (LeverLock) to help easily increase seat belt tension when forward-facing.
- No-rethread harness.
- Recline level bubble indicator.
Like many other all-in-one car seats, the OneFit LX is heavy and bulky, weighing 26 pounds. And because it’s on the heavier side, the seat can only be installed with lower anchors up to 35 pounds in the rear-facing position and 30 pounds forward-facing, since the LATCH system has a weight limit that includes the weight of the car seat and the child rider. But your child can continue to use the seat rear-facing up to 40 pounds if you switch from lower anchors to a seat belt installation—remember, keeping your child rear-facing for as long as possible is recommended by child passenger safety experts.
Our value pick in all-in-one car seats for 2026 stands out for its easy installation and excellent price. Our expert pick offers a high crash protection score and tons of parent-friendly features. Depending on your family’s needs and budget, one of these all-in-one car seats might be right for you.
Value Pick: Graco Trio Grow SnugLock

Any all-in-one car seat can save families money, but the Graco Trio Grow SnugLock especially so. The Trio Grow SnugLock has a near-perfect score in CR’s tests for ease of use and vehicle fit, and stands out for its easy installation and excellent price. “This is an affordable model with the added benefit of a seatbelt tensioner that really helps get a secure installation,” Thomas says. “It also provides great booster belt fit, so even as your child outgrows the harness, you can have confidence that the booster mode will continue to support them.” The harness also conveniently stores within the booster seat. Our testers recommend installing with the lower anchors when in rear-facing mode for the Trio Grow SnugLock.
Other features our testers appreciate include:
- Removable, machine-washable seat cover.
- No-rethread harness.
- Seat weighs 20 pounds, lighter than some other all-in-ones.
It’s worth noting that the Trio Grow SnugLock’s external side-impact features may limit its compatibility in certain vehicle seats.
Expert Pick for Best Parent-Friendly All-in-One: Joie Saffron SI
Graphic: Consumer Reports Graphic: Consumer Reports
An all-in-one car seat that rates highly in our ease-of-use tests, the Joie Saffron SI also earned our highest possible crash protection score. “It’s feature-packed, thanks to the magnetic buckle, easy-to-remove seat cover, and no-rethread harness,” Waller says, making day-to-day and stage-to-stage use uncomplicated. The Saffron is lighter than some all-in-one car seats, so it can be a little easier to move between vehicles as needed. Plus, “it has a luxury aesthetic at a mainstream price,” Thomas says.
Other features our testers appreciate include:
- Push-on LATCH connectors.
- Seatbelt tensioner to simplify installation
- Clear labeling.
- A harness that stores within seat for booster use.
- Magnetic harness buckle.
- No-rethread harness.
Keep in mind you may need to take extra care cleaning this all-in-one—our testers found there were many additional layers of pads where crumbs could hide. The design of the side-impact features might also limit which seating positions this seat can be installed in.
