BMW Recall: a 2001 BMW 3-series sedan that's included in the recall.

BMW is recalling nearly 357,000 cars and SUVs as part of ongoing efforts to repair faulty Takata airbags that could explode and injure or kill vehicle occupants. Three related recalls include a wide variety of vehicles from the 2000 through 2013 model years, including X1, X3, X5, and X6 SUVs, and 1 Series and 3 Series sedans, wagons, coupes, and convertibles.

More on the Takata Airbag Recall

These same vehicles were part of a previous recall in which defective Takata airbag inflators were temporarily replaced until permanent ones became available. Those permanent replacements are now ready; vehicle owners will need to have them installed even if they already had the interim repair performed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called the ongoing recall of airbags made by the major automotive parts supplier Takata "the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history." Over 41.6 million vehicles have been recalled because of the faulty airbags, which have been associated with 16 deaths in the U.S. and at least 24 deaths and 300 injuries worldwide.

The problem: The airbag inflators may explode because of propellant degradation after long-term exposure to high humidity, extreme temperatures, and temperature cycling. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

The fix: BMW dealers will replace the faulty airbags or airbag inflators, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: The recalls are expected to begin March 6, 2020. Owners can contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417.

NHTSA campaign number: For driver’s-side airbag repairs, NHTSA’s recall number is 20V017. For passenger-side airbag repairs on 3 Series vehicles, NHTSA’s recall number is 20V018. For passenger-side airbag repairs on X5 and X6 SUVs, NHTSA's recall number is 20V016.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA's website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car's 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA's website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
