2013 Ford Escape Recall for Rollaway Risk
2013 Ford Escape

Ford issued a recall of approximately 504,182 Ford Escape SUVs and Ford Fusion sedans in the U.S. because a faulty shifter cable bushing may allow the vehicle to roll away even though it appears to be in Park.

If the shifter cable bushing fails, it “may allow the transmission to be in a gear state different than the gear shift position selected by the driver,” said Ford in a statement. In other words, the transmission may not actually be in Park even if the driver moves the shift lever to the Park position. If that happens, the vehicle might move unintentionally, Ford says.

The Details

Vehicles recalled:

2013-14 Ford Escape SUVs built at Louisville, Ky., Assembly Plant between May 15, 2013, and Sept. 15, 2013
2014 Ford Fusion sedans built at Flat Rock, Mich., Assembly Plant between June 18, 2013, and Sept. 15, 2013
2014-16 Ford Fusion built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant between June 2, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015
2013-14 Ford Fusion built at Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly Plant in Sonora, Mexico, between May 15, 2013, and Sept. 15, 2013
2014-16 Ford Fusion built at Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly Plant between June 2, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015

The problem: “The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may detach from the transmission,” Ford said in a statement. “A degraded shifter cable bushing that detaches from the transmission may allow the transmission to be in a gear state different than the gear shift position selected by the driver.”

The fix: Ford said that dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing at no cost to the customer. In the meantime, owners should use their parking brake whenever they are parking. There is no start date yet for the recall.
