2015 Chevrolet Tahoe

General Motors has issued a recall for 638,068 Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks from 2014-2018 and Chevrolet and GMC SUVs from 2015-2020 because one wheel may brake unexpectedly, which could lead to a crash.

The problem is caused by a faulty wheel-speed sensor, which communicates the vehicle’s speed to key systems such as the antilock braking system. If this happens, a software error will tell the vehicle to activate the brakes on the wheel opposite the failed sensor, increasing the risk of a crash. If the condition occurs, drivers may notice a warning light about an ABS failure or a Stabilitrak failure.

General Motors has not yet responded to Consumer Reports' questions about whether there have been any injuries associated with this problem.

The Details

Vehicles recalled: 638,068 General Motors vehicles

Only vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine, four-wheel drive, and a 3.08-ratio rear axle are in the recall.

The problems: A wheel-speed sensor may fail. If that happens, an error in the software that controls the vehicle’s braking could activate the brakes on the wheel opposite the failed sensor. This can occur when the vehicle is in all-wheel-drive or automatic mode, and when the vehicle is driven at speeds from 41 to 60 mph.

The fix: General Motors will notify owners, and Chevrolet and GMC dealers will reprogram the brake system software free of charge. GM’s number for this recall is N192261050.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Chevrolet customer service at 800-630-2438 and GMC customer service at 800-462-8782.

NHTSA campaign number: 19V761.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has a recall that needs to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
