Chevrolet and GMC Heavy-Duty Pickup Trucks Recalled Because Tailgate May Unexpectedly Open

The concern involves 2500HD and 3500HD versions with a power-locked tailgate

General Motors is recalling 323,232 Chevrolet and GMC full-sized pickup trucks—including 2500HD and 3500HD versions—due to concerns that the power-locking tailgate may open, potentially creating a road hazard as bed contents spill out.

Consequently, GM has issued a stop-sale order to dealers on certain 2020-2024 model-year Chevrolet and GMC full-sized trucks until the tailgate defect is corrected.

Parts are not yet available, but when they are, dealerships will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies.

The problem is blamed on water coming in contact with the electric tailgate-release switch, potentially causing a short circuit. GM advises that the tailgate could unlatch when the truck is in Park, and recommends owners check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

Owners will be notified beginning March 18, 2024.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD
    • 2020-2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD

The problem: The switch on power-locking tailgates may short circuit, risking the tailgate becoming unlocked when the truck is parked.

The fix: Dealerships will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, at no charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Reach Chevrolet customer service at 800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 800-462-8782.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V060000. GM’s number for this recall is N232426400.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
