Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Recalled to Fix Engine Shutdown Issue

An electrical short could cause the engine to shut off without warning while the car is in motion

Chrysler issued a recall for over 67,000 Pacifica Hybrid minivans from the 2017 through 2023 model years because the gas engine might suddenly stop while the car is moving, which could lead to a crash.

The problem involves an internal transmission wiring connector. If the connector has an electrical short, it could result in an unexpected engine shutdown. Chrysler told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is aware of 307 warranty claims and/or customer complaints related to this issue, but no crashes or injuries.

To fix the issue, Chrysler says that dealers will perform a software update that would warn drivers if their engine is about to shut off and give them enough time to safely pull over. A Chrysler spokesperson tells CR that if a short occurs in these circumstances, the connector itself is not affected. The software update is not yet available. (Learn what to do when there’s no fix available yet for your car’s recall.)

The plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) has been recalled before due to a fire risk. That problem has now been solved.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid PHEV minivans manufactured between Aug. 12, 2016, and Jan. 9, 2023.

The problem: An electrical short within a wiring harness could result in an unexpected engine shutdown.

The fix: Chrysler dealerships will update the software on affected vehicles to give drivers a warning before the engine shuts down. This update is not yet available.

How to contact the manufacturer: Chrysler will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail starting March 8, 2023. Owners may also contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V010. Chrysler’s number for this recall is 03A.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
