Ford Bronco Is Recalled to Make Seat Belts Easier to Access

The belts are currently too difficult to reach and therefore don’t meet federal safety standards

Ford is recalling more than 175,000 five-door Bronco SUVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years because their driver and front passenger seat belts might be difficult to reach. As a result, they don’t meet federal motor vehicle safety standards because occupants might not wear their belts if they’re too hard to use.

The problem has to do with the location of the latch plate, which is the metal part of the seat belt that you insert into the buckle. When your belt is unbuckled, federal safety standards say it’s supposed to hang somewhere that’s easy to reach. But during routine compliance testing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that the Bronco didn’t have enough room between the seat and the vehicle’s interior trim for occupants to easily reach the latch plate.

Ford dealerships will install a small clip on both front belts that keeps the latch plate hanging in a position that’s easier for drivers and front passengers to access. As with all recall repairs, the fix is free of charge.

Ford says there have been no customer complaints, injuries, or crashes related to this recall.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Ford Bronco five-door SUVs manufactured between Sept. 23, 2020, and May 9, 2023.

The problem: The seat belt latch clips don’t meet federal safety standards. Specifically, they’re not in compliance with S7.4.4, “Latch Plate Access,” within Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208.

The fix: Ford dealerships will install a clip that keeps the latch from sliding somewhere that’s too hard to reach. This fix is free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Ford at 866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V358. Ford’s own number for this recall is 23C16.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
