Ford Super Duty Trucks and Lincoln Continental Sedans Recalled for Surround View Camera Problem

A coating on the camera lens could become foggy and obscure the image

Ford has announced the recall of more than 277,000 F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty pickup trucks and Lincoln Continental sedans because of a problem with their 360-degree camera systems. A coating on the camera lens may degrade over time, which could result in the rearview camera image displayed inside the vehicle looking foggy or cloudy over time with continued exposure to UV radiation.

Ford initiated an investigation in August 2021 after an increase in warranty reports for problems with the quality of the rear camera image. The reports said that cleaning the lens did not fix the problem. After monitoring data from vehicles in service and conducting a study that subjected cameras to weathering, which revealed that one of the inner lenses would experience cracking of the anti-reflective coating, on Aug. 19, 2022, Ford approved the fix for the problem.

The automaker says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with these faulty parts. A full 100 percent of the recalled vehicles have the faulty coating.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: 277,040 Ford and Lincoln vehicles from the 2017 through 2020 model years, including:

    • 139,131 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup trucks
    • 109,960 Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks
    • 14,830 Ford F-450 Super Duty pickup trucks
    • 13,119 Lincoln Continental sedans

The problem: The anti-reflective lens coating could degrade, leading to a foggy or cloudy surround view camera image.

The fix: Ford and Lincoln dealers will replace the surround view camera, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Ford will notify owners via mail starting Sept. 12, 2022. Owners of affected vehicles may call Ford at 866-436-7332.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign number: 22V644. Ford’s number for the recall is 22S51.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
