Hyundai Elantra Recalled to Fix Faulty Trunk Latches

If the latch fails on recalled 2015 and 2016 models, the trunk can’t be opened from the inside

Hyundai is recalling over 186,000 Elantra sedans from the 2015 and 2016 model years because their trunk latches may fail. If this happens, a person stuck in the trunk will not be able to open it from the inside using the emergency interior trunk release, and the vehicle will not comply with federal regulations. Owners may also notice that the trunk lid becomes more difficult to open from the outside.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

To fix the problem, Hyundai dealerships will replace the trunk latch with a more durable part free of charge. Owners who already paid for a repair out of pocket may be eligible for reimbursement.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai says there have been 11,724 reports of trunk latch failures but none resulting in injuries or crashes.

    Hyundai Elantra Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Hyundai Elantra vehicles manufactured between Dec. 26, 2014, and Dec. 22, 2015.

The problem: When exposed to high ambient temperatures, the trunk latch pawl may thermally contract. If the trunk is opened in that situation, it could damage the pawl and prevent the opening of the emergency trunk release from inside the vehicle. As such, the vehicles will not be in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 401, “Interior Trunk Release.”

The fix: Hyundai dealerships will replace the faulty trunk latch with a more substantial version free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Hyundai at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V146. Hyundai’s own number for this recall is 256.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall. NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
