Hyundai is recalling 226,000 sedans and SUVs that may have a defective backup camera. Faulty solder joints on an internal circuit board could lead to a backup camera failure: No image will display on the infotainment screen while driving in Reverse, which can reduce rearward visibility and increase the risk of a crash or injury of a bystander.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards have required all new vehicles to have a backup camera since the 2018 model year.

The recalled models: 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Elantra sedans, 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs, 2022 Hyundai Elantra N sedans, and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid SUVs.

Hyundai estimates that 5 percent of the recalled vehicles are affected by the defect, which was first identified in 2022 after the automaker received customer complaints about malfunctioning backup cameras. Hyundai began installing a new rearview camera assembly without the solder joint problem in 2022. The automaker will replace faulty camera assemblies in recalled vehicles free of charge.

Hyundai says it will begin sending letters to the owners of affected vehicles on Jan. 19, 2025.

    Hyundai Backup Camera Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Elantra sedans
    • 2021 and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs
    • 2022 Hyundai Elantra N sedans
    • 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid SUVs

The problem: Weak solder joints on a printed circuit board that controls the backup camera could crack, causing the camera to malfunction. If the camera stops working, the driver will be unable to see a camera image on the infotainment display screen while driving in reverse.

The fix: Hyundai dealerships will replace the faulty backup camera assembly with a new one.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Hyundai at 855-371-9460.
