Infiniti SUVs Recalled Again for Faulty Passenger Airbags

It’s the third time these FX35 and FX45 SUVs have been recalled for airbag problems

    2007 Infiniti FX45 Infiniti

Infiniti is recalling some 2006 through 2008 FX35 and FX45 SUVs that have already had their passenger-side airbags replaced in an earlier recall. Those replacement airbags could tear during deployment and cause severe injuries to passengers, so they must be replaced again.

This will be the third time these vehicles have been included in an airbag-related recall. Infiniti first recalled the FX35 and FX45 in 2016 to replace defective Takata airbag inflators that could explode during a crash and propel sharp metal fragments at vehicle occupants. Because of parts shortages, these vehicles received temporary replacement airbag inflators, which were swapped out for supposedly permanent replacements as part of a January 2020 recall.

Now the permanent replacements have turned out to be faulty as well. Quality control tests performed by the airbag supplier showed that a small change in how the airbags were assembled at the factory puts them at risk of rupture.

In documentation provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this latest recall.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Certain Infiniti FX35 and FX45 SUVs from the 2006 through 2008 model years that have already had their passenger-side airbags replaced in a previous recall.

The problem: A change in the way the replacement airbags were folded at the airbag supplier’s factory means they could rupture during deployment.

The fix: Infiniti dealerships will replace the faulty airbags free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 18, 2021.

How to contact the manufacturer: Infiniti will notify owners of affected vehicles by first-class mail. Owners may also contact Infiniti at 800-662-6200.

NHTSA campaign number: 21V139. Infiniti’s number for this recall is R20C2.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
