Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs Recalled for Wheels That Could Come Loose

If this happens while driving, it could cause a crash

Jeep is recalling over 338,000 2021 through 2023 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 through 2023 Grand Cherokee SUVs because a suspension component could break and cause a wheel to detach and fall outward from the vehicle. A Stellantis spokesperson told Consumer Reports that the wheel does not separate but rather "comes loose."

The problem is due to an error during the manufacturing process, which may have damaged bolts on the upper control arm. If these bolts break, the upper control arm ball joint and steering knuckle may separate, which could lead to a loss of control. Drivers may also notice abnormal noises when traveling over bumps.

To fix the issue, Jeep dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the improperly installed bolts. As with all recalls, the repair will be free of charge, and owners who have already paid to fix the problem may be eligible for reimbursement.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jeep says that it is aware of 20 complaints and no crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Jeep recently recalled some Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles from the same model years for steering and rear suspension problems.

    Jeep Grand Cherokee Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs manufactured between Dec. 3, 2020, and May 30, 2023
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs manufactured between Dec. 19, 2021, and May 30, 2023

The problem: A pinch bolt that was damaged during the assembly process may break and result in the loss of clamp load between the upper control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle, which could cause the wheel to fall outboard (aka come loose) and lead to a crash.

The fix: Jeep dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the pinch bolts, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Jeep at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V132. Jeep’s number for this recall is 10B.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
