Kia Recalls More Sorento SUVs for Fire Risk

Vehicles will get an extended warranty after an important software update

Kia is recalling nearly 80,000 Sorento SUVs from the 2011 model year because the engine compartment could catch fire while the vehicle is in motion. Owners will need to bring their vehicles in to dealerships for a free software update designed to prevent this problem.

MORE ON KIA AND HYUNDAI RECALLS

Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of fire-related recalls involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles, and follows an investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. So far, over 10 million vehicles from both automakers—who share corporate ownership and many of the same parts from the same suppliers—have been recalled for fire-related issues over the past 12 years.

The Sorentos recalled today all have a specific four-cylinder engine known as the Theta II. To address issues with this engine on other Hyundai and Kia models, the automakers have installed a software update called a “knock sensor detection system (KSDS) update.” It is meant to prevent potential engine damage and resulting fires. The vehicles recalled today have not yet had the KSDS update, according to documents Kia provided to NHTSA.

The automaker says that dealerships will install the KSDS update, free of charge, and replace vehicle engines if necessary. In addition, after vehicles receive the software update, Kia will provide extended warranty coverage for engine repairs related to this recall for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Owners who have already paid for related repairs before this recall was issued may be eligible for reimbursement.

Before a fire, drivers may notice the check engine light illuminated on the dash, and smoke and/or a burning smell coming from the engine compartment.

2011 Kia Sorento Fire Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2011 Kia Sorento SUVs

The problem: An engine compartment fire may occur while driving. In documents provided to NHTSA, Kia says it is still trying to determine the cause of the fires.

The fix: Kia dealerships will perform a software update and add an extended warranty for certain engine components, free of charge. In some cases, dealerships will replace the vehicle’s engine, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Kia at 800-333-4542.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V877. Kia’s own number for this recall is SC291.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
