Over a Million Ram Pickup Trucks Recalled Because the Tailgates May Open

The tailgate may not latch properly on certain 2019-2022 models

Stellantis is recalling about 1.23 million Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks because the tailgate latch may fail, risking cargo stowed in the bed spilling out, potentially causing a crash.

    more on recalls

The company says the recall action does not include trucks with a multifunction tailgate, or with tailgate sensors, or Ram 1500 Classic pickups.

The problem is traced to one or both tailgate strikers being misaligned, risking the tailgate becoming unlatched and opening. In June 2022, an improved alignment tool was implemented for production. Heavy-duty trucks built after June 1 and light-duty Ram 1500s built after July 10, 2022, are not included in the recall.

Owner notification letters will be mailed at the end of January, 2023. Until the repair is made, Stellantis encourages owners to secure their cargo, following directions in the owner’s manual.

The company not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: 2019-2022 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks
The problem: The tailgate strikers may be misaligned, risking the tailgate unlatching and opening.
The fix: Dealers will inspect the tailgate striker alignment to the box latch and adjust, if necessary, free of charge.
How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Stellantis/FCA US, LLC customer service at 800-853-1403.
NHTSA campaign number: 22V904000. The automaker’s number for this recall is ZB8.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
